Questions
1. The word paraphilia itself means any group of psychosexual behaviors characterized by sexual
fantasies, feelings or activities that involve a nonhuman objects or noncensenting partner, pain
or humiliation of a partner or self. The difference between a non coercive and coercive
paraphilias are that weather or not they involve en element or coercion. Coercive behavior
involves victimization and cause harm, while a non coercive paraphilia by many is considered
not harmless and person’s basic rights are not violated. Which basically mean they chose to
participate in this kind of activity. There are three common types of coercive behaviors.
Exhibitionism is when a person is exposing his/her genitals to someone who is unwilling to
observe it, obscene phone calls is second one. Whenever their victim is horrified or shocked by
their phone call they experience sexual arousal. And the third one voyeurism. That’s when a
person is usually getting some sexual pleasure by observing sexual activities of others or just by
looking at naked bodies. Some of the common types of non coercive are fetishism. That’s when
a person becomes sexually aroused by looking at some kind of object or a part of human body.
The other would be sexual sadism. A person is getting aroused through giving psychological or
physical pain. And the third one would be sexual masochism where person would receive sexual
pleasure though, this time receiving physical or psychological pain.
2. Sexual addiction is referred to the idea that people are obsessed with sex or have an extreme
sex drive. It interacts with their personal and everyday life and makes it difficult to function
normally for that person. Weather to recognize if a person is sexually addicted there are some
typical behaviors that are associated with sexual addiction. Like multiple affairs, unsafe sex,
sexual harassment, rape, consistent use of pornography. Those are just some of the examples.
The treatment of sexual addiction mostly focuses on controlling the addictive behavior of the
person and healthy sexuality. Counseling and some medications are also available.
3. Some of the false beliefs about rape that I read in the book are:
a. “Women can’t be raped if the really don’t want to be” is false. A lot of times women can’t
do anything about it. They are not as physically strong as men are and second women are
typically more compliant then men are and men sometime would take an advantage of that.
b. “Rapists are obviously mentally ill” is false. This rape myth is especially dangerous. A lot of
women think that they can identify a rapist or they are safe, because they know that person.
A lot of time rapes are committed by people who are not mentally ill and usually know to
the victim.
4. There are 4 types of rapes out there. The first one is Acquaintance Rape that is committed by
someone that victim knows for example a friend. Second one is Date Rape Drugs. The drug
called Rohypnol is commonly used by the rapists. The drug is strongly sedative and causes
muscle relaxation plus mild amnesia. This type of drug is commonly used by rapists when they
take their victim on the date. The third type of rape is war time rape. In this case two individuals
are involved in coercive interaction. Rape during war is often used to terrorize and demoralize a
whole population and dominate, humiliate and control women. Thousands of women get raped
by the wartime rape. The fourth type of rape is aftermath rape. In this case a person is raped by
a stranger, acquaintance or a partner. In this case people usually feel fear, anger, depression
and shame about what happened to them.
5. An adult involving in a sexual contact with any child including inappropriate touching, oralgenital stimulation and so on is called child sexual abuse. Child abuse can have painful and long
lasting effects on the child. There have been a lot of cases as father-daughter, brother-sister,
first-cousin contacts were children have been molested. Some of the characteristics of people
(pedophiles) who sexually abuse children are that the victim is know to the rapist and the rapists
are usually heterosexual males. Also people who are alcoholics and have sever mental problems
are willing to do something like that. Many children suffer around the world by those pedophiles
and later have a very serious long lasting psychological and physical difficulties. Weather to
prevent child sexual abuse we need to educate children about it. Take time to explain what is ok
touches are which ones are not. Teach them that they have rights to always say no and they
have control over their bodies. Tell them that they need to tell someone right away if something
inappropriate like this happens.
6. Prostitution is a sexual services performed for money. It’s usually women providing sexual
services to a man. Examples would be phone sex, erotic message, porn movies and so on.
Prostitution has existed throughout the history for a long time. It has been called as one of the
oldest profession out there. During some periods of ancient Greek history prostitutes were
valued for their intellectual, sexual and social companionship. In Victorian Great Britain
prostitution was viewed as scandalous, but necessary sexual outlet for men. The typical
costumers for the prostitutes would be men who want to have sex without any future
commitment or any expectations. Or men who want to try some sexual techniques that he
would not do with his partner. Going to the prostitute also illuminates the risk of being rejected
for men by women.
7. 47% of sex workers in United States are younger than 18 years old. Teenagers usually become
prostitutes after they run away from home, weather to survive. A lot of them have been sexually
abuse or have been rejected by their families. Teenagers also do it for quick money to spend
however they want and also for the excitement. There are four types of male prostitutes that
are out there: male escorts, gigolos, rent-boys, models. Rent- boy is a guy who is not gay, but
willing to have sex with male clients for money. Male prostitutes offering services to females are
known as “gigolos”. Male escorts are also know as male prostitutes. Male hustlers are willing to
have sex with gays and male customers on the street or in bars. They also charge the least for
their services.
8. Some of the effective ways to deal with sexual harassment at work would to file a criminal
charges against the perpetrator. If the harassment is not very severe let the person know that
what he/she is doing is a harassment to you. In this later the person should clearly specify
details and if they don’t stop it you would perform some serious actions. If the offender doesn’t
stop the person should immediately discuss the situation with the supervisor of the offender. If
the supervisor and offender does not respond on this problem, person may file an official
complain to the city or state Human Rights Commission. And finally if the person wishes to do
some legal actions to resolve the problem he can file lawsuit to the federal court under the Civil
Rights Act.
9. The connection between rape and exposure to different types of pornography in people is a
powerful role of the media on a rapist. Researchers say that by looking at sexual images with
violence may deviant patterns of physiological sexual arousal. After looking at pornography
people get the ideas of what they want to do to someone weather for them to be aroused.
Research also says that violet or degrading pornography caused sexually aggressive behaviors of
men toward women and that all pornography caused promiscuity. Usually the way pornography
works is it starts mildly and then a person wants’ more and more until they get into this sever
stage where they want to see a violent pornography or child pornography. Pornography can also
become addictive to the person and can interfere with their everyday and personal life.
10. Weather for a women to reduce a risk of having an acquaintance and stranger rape she needs at
first get to know the person a lot better before she can go on a personal date with that person.
At first group situation would be a good choice. She can also watch for indications that the
person is dominating like controlling your behavior or a men who plants all the activities. Also if
a men pays for all the expenses he might think that he has all rights not get what he wants now.
Avoiding alcohol when you are on the date if you don’t want to be sexually intimate with the
date. Intoxication can decrease capacity to escape from an assault. Also to reduce the risk of
stranger rape women should not advertise that she is a women living alone. Have secure locks
on doors and windows especially if she is moving into the new residence. She should not open
door to the strangers. Always ask people for identification if they are coming to the house to fix
something or do some kind of work. Always take cell phone whenever women is out alone
somewhere. Whenever women go it would be helpful to carry a device for making a loud noise
in case of danger. Those are just of the ways that women can protect he selfr from unexpected
and unwanted rape.
