SUBJECT: NC State University Energy Fellowship Program STARS Recognition
This memo serves as a letter of affirmation of the innovative NC State University (NC State) Energy Fellowship
Program and highlights the program’s accomplishments.
OVERVIEW
The Energy Fellowship program goal is to provide on-the-job experiences for current, or recently-graduated,
students to enhance their education and encourage them to consider employment in professional energy
management fields in North Carolina. The program is funded through a U.S. Dept. of Energy, American
Recovery and Reinvestment grant that are administered through the North Carolina State Energy Office.
The NC State, Utilities and Engineering Services, Energy Management was awarded $475,488 to place ten
Energy Fellows with internal organizations including NC State Energy Management, the North Carolina Solar
Center, the Sustainability Office, the Future Renewable Electric Energy Delivery and Management Systems
Center (FREEDM), and one external organization, Advanced Energy. The fellowships began in January 2011
and will conclude in April 2012.

ACOMPLISHMENTS
Each of the host organizations has immersed the Fellows in meaningful projects. A list of actual Fellowship
projects follows.
NC State Energy Management
- Conducting a student sustainability/energy/waste reduction/transportation survey
- Participating in 50 campus building energy audits that have identified potential energy savings of $2
mm with a ROI less than 1-yr
NC State Office of Sustainability
- Creating a campus green ambassador program to engage students
- Developing an inventory of existing campus renewable energy projects and developing new processes
to promote further development
- Updating the campus greenhouse gas inventory
NC Solar Center
- Facilitating the installation of electric vehicle plug in stations
- Completing a state-wide inventory of vehicle fleet alternative fuel use
Advanced Energy
- Conducting public sector and commercial building energy audits
- Creating energy-efficiency best practice outreach materials for NC home builders
FREEDM
- Overhauling program marketing materials for luring students and corporate sponsors
- Attending national meetings and conventions to promote FREEDM programs
- Conducting a smart-grid feasibility study for a campus demonstration project.
CLOSING
In keeping with the STARS reporting purpose, the direct affect of the Energy Fellowship program has been the
creation new jobs, implementation of meaningful collaborative workplace experiences, and hands-on
deployment of professional energy management means and methods. The secondary effects of the
Fellowships has been much more pervasive - the organizations with which these Energy Fellows ultimately
spend their careers will become more efficient, profitable, and prepared for North Carolina’s future.
