On Friday, July 27, 2007, five hundred rising college juniors from across the state will
arrive on the campus of East Carolina University. All are recipients of the North Carolina
Teaching Fellows Scholarship Program and will participate in the conference entitled
“Exploring the Power of Diversity Through Conversation.”
The conference will feature three nationally recognized speakers and consultants: Emily
Ballance, a Licensed Professional Counselor who speaks on humor, communication and
stress management; Brian Freeman, NC’s Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year and recipient of
the 2003 National Education Association Foundation Teaching Excellence Award; and
Deollo Johnson, consultant, professional speaker and author of “One Heart at a Time,” a
new book on diversity, leadership, and motivation. Johnson will train facilitators in the
process used for the conference.
Conference attendees will have an opportunity to enhance their awareness of differences
and develop communication skills to effectively teach North Carolina’s increasingly
diverse student population. The conference is a joint effort of the NC Teaching Fellows
Commission, The NC Center for the Advancement of Teaching, the Public School Forum,
and East Carolina University.
The NC Teaching Fellows Program is a scholarship program that awards $6500 per year
for four years to 500 outstanding NC high school seniors.
