Did you notice that the definition of R was Turn LEFT and that the definition of L was
Turn Right? You should have arrived at the first checkpoint having made 3 LEFT TURNS rather
than 3 RIGHT TURNS! Amazingly, it worked both ways.
CHECKPOINT 1
Full Credit: Stop only at the Sample Checkpoint
No Credit: Stop at the non-Sample Checkpoint
You were not allowed to stop at a checkpoint without a sign that was textually identical to the
checkpoint sign on display where you received your Course Pages. That sign included the word
SAMPLE, so you could not stop at a checkpoint without such a sign. There was a checkpoint
with a proper sign farther down the block!
Q2
Full Credit: Yes
No Credit: No
Oh come on, none of those signs included the word WATCHES; they all said NEIGHBORHOOD
WATCH, not WATCHES. However, the definition of Double Quotes simply required a sign
WHOSE COMPLETE OR PARTIAL TEXT APPEARS WITHIN THE DOUBLE QUOTES. Indeed, the partial text of
those signs (the word Neighborhood) appeared within the Double Quotes.

As you were looking for a place to R @ STOP for NRI 8, you came to a Stop Sign where right
turns were not required to stop, so you could not R at STOP there; the Stop Sign in the middle
of the road didn't count since it was not LOCATED BEYOND THE RIGHT EDGE OF THE PAVEMENT. You
should have gone straight into the dead-end (Valley Oak), U-Turned at dead-end, R at Stop to
go east (rather than west) on Calgrove, R on White Oak, U-Turned at dead-end, L at T (west on
Calgrove). 1/2 Credit for realizing that TRL was an abbreviation and thus not part of the name.
1/4 Credit for at least remembering that freeways have a special name.

The only driveways that exist are the ones at the Start and the Finish locations. You drove by
the Start location while looking for driveways for this Q.

Full Credit: SARDA
No Credit: VIA ADORNA
You passed VIA ALCIRA, then ROTUNDA ended and SARDA began, then you passed VIA JUANA
and then VIA ADORNA, then SARDA ended and ESCALERA began, and then you came to
VIA HAMACA. The last roadway you passed before VIA HAMACA was SARDA, which you passed
lengthwise.
Q6
Full Credit: VIA ALCIRA
No Credit: PLAZA GAVILAN
The answerability period for this Q began as soon as you completed the last NRI appearing
before it, NRI 12. The next RDWY you came to was VIA ALCIRA.

2/3 Credit: OAK VALE & BARGANCA (deduct 1 point for OAKVALE <no space>)
1/3 Credit: GOLF VIEW & TOURNAMENT or GOLFVIEW & PLAYER
1/6 Credit: TOURNAMENT & GOLF VIEW
No Credit: Any answer that includes HOGAN (Private) or AILEAN (non-existent).
You came to a T with a STOP and you were Onto Tournament. Tournament went left, and
Golf Course went right. So, you did your L @ STOP, right? No!
Since you were ONTO Tournament, you could not execute a route instruction that did not
cause you to leave that roadway (Tournament).
Well, if you couldn't do the NRI, how about doing the LRI: L @ T? No, the same problem
applied; the LRI didn't cause you to leave Tournament, either.
So, you just went left to stay Onto Tournament, right? No!
The ONTO rule did not require you to stay on Tournament. You were at a T where no
Route Instruction (LRI or NRI) could be executed, so you had to U-Turn.
However, you had encountered a STOP which you had to turn Left @ (either when you first
encountered it or as soon as possible thereafter), so you owed a left turn.
But, it was also a T where no other Route Instruction could be turned for, so you owed another
left turn. Which of those two saved-up left turns should you have done first?
The one for the LRI had higher precedence, so it should have been done onto OAKVALE, and
the one for the NRI should have been done onto BARGANCA.
For good measure, you should have noticed that it was OAK VALE, not OAKVALE, which
intersected with BARGANCA. You should have gone to the dead-end beyond CIELO, U-Turned,
and then turned right after BARGANCA after CIELO, back on (but no longer Onto) Tournament.

An OPP was defined as a RDWY at which you could turn in a direction …; since there were two
RDWYs at the T (Del Monte to the left and Arroyo Park to the right were separate roadways),
both were RDWYs AT WHICH you could turn right, so you should have turned right there for
NRI 17. If not, you should have at least counted one right OPP as you were turning L @ T.
Q9
Full Credit: MORITZ
2/3 Credit: ST. MORITZ
No Credit: CHARONNE
An OPP required you be able to turn right since the active NRI was R on Kirstengary…, so you
should not have counted a roadway, such as Charonne, at which you could not turn right. For
full credit, you had to recognize that ST. was an abbreviation, although it was in a different
context (Saint at the beginning rather than Street at the end) than most other abbreviations.
Q 10
Full Credit: PASEO
2/3 Credit: MONTE
1/3 Credit: MAGDALENA
No Credit: TIERRA
Were you so excited to use the first word of at least 5 letters to name each roadway that you
forgot that the name of the roadway you are traveling on always comes first? The INT of
PASEO & MONTE requires that you be on PASEO where it meets MONTE, not vice versa; you
had to go around the block to find the correct INT.
But wait, there's more!
As you were looking for the last RDWY other than ESTABAN, you came to the Intersection of
MONTE/PASEO/ESTABAN; the other roadway (PASEO if you were on MONTE, or MONTE if you
were on PASEO) was the last RDWY other than ESTABAN.
Q 11
Full Credit: CALLE
No Credit: ARINO or CALLE ARINO
The fact that the word CALLE was printed smaller on the sign was irrelevant; CALLE was still the
first 5+ letter word on the roadway-naming sign, even though it is the Spanish word for Street.

Q 12
Full Credit: NONE or TURKEY
1/2 Credit: ALTA or STOP (but not both)
No Credit: ALTA & STOP
Since only the first word of at least 5 letters named the roadway, the roadway was named
MADERA, not ALTA since ALTA has only 4 letters. Even though the ALTO sign required you to
stop, it was not a STOP since the sign said ALTO instead of STOP.
CHECKPOINT 2
Full Credit: Last completed NRI 28
1/2 Credit: Last completed NRI 27
No Credit: Last completed NRI 26.
How could you complete NRI 27? Sure, we let you out of the land of Español, but did you
notice that you passed a road named ALTA while traveling on John Russell?
How could you possibly have completely executed NRI 28? You may have just completed the
Stop at Checkpoint part of NRI 28, but you haven't yet gotten a chance to do the L on Miguel
part. But in fact you have! Since you can do the parts of an NRI in whatever order you get a
chance to do them in (not necessarily in the order presented), and you came to Miguel (on the
left) before you got to the checkpoint, you should have done L on Miguel first, U-turn at
Dead-End, L at T, and then Stop at Checkpoint.

Didn't the sign clearly say ONLY ONLY ONLY ? Of course it did. But, what did the question
ask you to count? "ONLY", a Sign which includes ONLY. There was just one such Sign.

1/2 Credit: 0.1 miles
No Credit: Several miles
Oh, come on! Didn't we drive about 6½ miles? However, the question asked about the
distance between the NRIs, not their execution points. The NRIs were about ½ inch apart,
which rounds to 0.0 miles, not to 0.1 miles.

Of course you couldn't include the INTs you encountered while traveling on Friendly Valley.
But you couldn't count the INTs while traveling on Green Mountain, either. Although the
roadway was initially named GREEN (because the abbreviation MTN was not part of the
roadway name), once GREEN ended and GREEN MOUNTAIN began (at what might have been
an unmarked INT), you were no longer on GREEN.

Fairgate wouldn't do, it starts with F.
Oak Crossing wouldn't do, it starts with O.
Whispering Leaves wouldn't do, it starts with W.
So, it had to be Torreypines, right? No, not quite!
Did you notice that NRI 34 was an NRI with two portions separated by the word OR;
the 2nd portion (after the word OR) was simply L, which you should have done by turning Left
at the very first Intersection, on GIMLET. But wait, there's more!
Did you notice the Freeway (named Turkey Trot) just before "ONLY"? The place where
Cedar Valley crossed over Turkey Trot was also an Intersection.
Q 17

No Credit: CAPE JASMINE & SILVERBELL
Since NRI 37 contained both R (on Wren) and L (at 2nd OPP), an OPP for NRI 37 included
RDWYs at which you could R and those at which you could L. Before you came to Cape Jasmine
on the left, you came to Cardinal on the right, which should have been counted as the 1st OPP;
the 2nd OPP was the 1st Cape Jasmine. If you did not realize that both directions counted for
OPPs, you should have skipped the 2nd consecutive Cape Jasmine and used Sweetgum instead.
Q 18
Full Credit: ROSE MALLOW
2/3 Credit: IVY
1/3 Credit: Turkey
No Credit: ENGLISH IVY
Autumn Oak was obviously the first OPP, and the next one was English Ivy. Oops, "English"
does not exist, so it's just Ivy, right? But the definition of Double Quotes was a SIGN whose
complete or partial text appears on the sign. If "English" does not exist, that renders the whole
sign (Ivy included) non-existent, so the roadway is unnamed. However, the definition of OPP
requires it to be a RDWY, which requires that the roadway have a name that is different than
the roadway you are on. The next roadway that qualified as an OPP was ROSE MALLOW.

There was a pre-marker for Oak Spring before the sign at the intersection (Oak Springs). There
was also a sign naming the park (Oak Spring Park), just before you returned to Oak Springs,
which you only included if you realized that the question remained answerable until you
completed NRI 45 by stopping at the Checkpoint.
CHECKPOINT:
Full Credit: Don't say 'Boy, he sure is out early this year'
No Credit: Say 'Boy, he sure is out early this year'
You should not have said so. You may have passed SANTA CLARITA (Pkwy) but you had to refer
to it only by its full name, not just Santa.
CHECKPOINT: Return visit – still having last completed NRI 45.
Why would you come right back to the checkpoint? Because we made it impossible to R/L by
defining R/L as Turn your Car to the Right/Left and then removing you from your Car and
placing you in TRUCK! What better reason is there to put a checkpoint in one end of a double
dead-end roadway?

Even though "SAM" (the sign) did not exist, nothing prevented you from traveling on an
unnamed roadway. Since the "SAM" sign was not the same sign as the "MARILYN" sign
(although it was on the same post), "MARILYN" still existed.
Q 21

You should have counted Brandon (the road that goes around the circle) as your first OPP.
Wait a minute, wasn't that a Forced Turn? We weren't allowed to count an OPP at a
Forced Turn, were we? Well, actually you were! Rallymaster Instruction 3 told you to delete
the last sentence of Paragraph II of Checkpoint Instruction 2; however, it never said to do it just
once. Rally Rule 4 says to execute each instruction as soon and as often as applicable. As soon
as the 4th sentence of Checkpoint Instruction 2 was gone, then the 3rd sentence became the
last sentence, so it too was gone, then the 2nd sentence became the last sentence, so it was
gone as well. It doesn't matter if the 1st sentence was deleted; all the Forced Turn restrictions
were gone.

Did you realize that you were at a T each time you came to the traffic circle? Of course you
had no choice but to force right, but each one was still a T that you were required to L @ (at or
as soon as possible thereafter). Since you couldn't L at the T, you had to L as soon as possible
thereafter. So you started down Spencer with 2 saved up left turns; one was done at Rob Roi
and the other at Rex.

Although you were carrying 5 turkeys in your Turkey Truck, you did not Encounter them
because they were behind you.

The farthest you could see was about 100 feet, which is the maximum distance beyond the
side of the road per Rally Rule 10.

Where is Q 25, anyhow? Some may have noticed that it was printed on the back of the
Control Card. However, there is no penalty for not noticing such a sneaky trap because a Q is
defined as a question appearing on your Course Pages. Although that thing on the back of your
Control Card said Q 25, it was not a Q and should not have been answered.

Why? Re-read LRI Lefty. It said: L @ EACH T YOU COME TO WHERE NO OTHER RI CAN BE TURNED FOR.
The intersection of Kenroy and Soledad, with the parking lot straight ahead, fit the definition of
a T (An INTERSECTION where there is a roadway to your right and a roadway to your left, but
past which no roadway continues generally straight ahead) because parking lots and driveways
are not roadways, although you are allowed to travel on them at the Start and Finish locations.
Thus this was a T where no other RI (Route Instruction) could be turned for, since the NRI you
were seeking to execute was P (Proceed Straight Ahead) into Sand Canyon Center. So, you L at
the T and you reach the checkpoint roadway within about half a mile; R on Oak Springs.
12 points are possible for each of the 30 scored items (25 questions, 5 checkpoints).
