Message from President, David Carter
Dear SRA Members –
Sheer JOY. That's the look I see on the faces of kids and adults alike as I watch them arrive at
Southampton. Children running full speed for the pool or the ice rink, parents in tow. Teenagers
glad to meet up with their 'SRA' friends. People of all ages hustling on the tennis court. Families
setting up camp at 9 am, for the swim meet that doesn't begin until 6:30 pm. The applause at the
end of the Ice Revue. We all come here to swim, skate, play tennis, or watch our kids do those
things, but in the process something unique happens, and we find ourselves forming life-long
friendships. It’s the people who make SRA a special place, a place that is full of JOY.
Even on these cold short days of winter, there is a lot going on at SRA. Making a bigger splash
than a cannonball off the diving board is the debut of our brand new website. Hats off to Caley
Cantrell who has spearheaded this effort and put in countless hours over the past year to make it
happen. It’s going to look amazing and the best part is, SRA has finally come into the 21st
century! You will now have the option to pay online for most activities and events at the club,
including annual dues and initiation fees for new members. Over the past few years, I have often
heard people say that SRA was the only place where they still had to write a check. Well folks,
you can throw those check books away! We know the online option will be a great choice for
many of you, but if you still prefer checks or cash, no worries. We'll still take money the old
fashioned way.
In conjunction with the new site, we will be utilizing a new software program which will contain
a database of current member names, addresses, and phone numbers. This is something our
membership has been asking for and will be a great benefit for everyone. The information will
only be accessible to members through a secure login, and not to the general public. You will be
able to change or update it yourself any time. Regardless of how you pay for your renewal, once
the new site is available, we will ask all members new and old to go online and set up their new
membership accounts, so we can have current, up to date information on everyone.
Our tennis program is growing by leaps and bounds. The most visible sign of growth you will
now see is a brand new tennis office and storage house located between the lower courts and the
ice rink. This is sure to become the hub for all things tennis at SRA, but will immediately
provide much needed office and storage space for the program.
Our Ice program is once again in full swing and at near capacity. The ice rink is one of those
things that yet again, makes SRA unique. Ice Director Darla Toler, along with our lead skate
instructor, Allison Ezzi, did a fantastic job organizing their first fund raiser ever, selling live
holiday wreaths. The proceeds brought in over $2000 which will all go toward roof repairs on
the Ice House. Minor repairs have already been completed, but we have a long term goal of
raising enough money to replace or amend the entire roof so that the building can become
airtight and insulated, which will allow the making and maintaining of ice much easier.
We are fortunate to mark 2015 as our swim team's lucky 13th year with head coach Mike Peters.
Mike has led the Swordfish to 13 undefeated seasons in a row, with 11 league championships.
This year we welcome Kristen Mullins as our new Swim Team Director. Kristen has been
shadowing Amy Turner this past year and is ready to take over the reins. Be on the lookout for
the usual barrage of emails to begin soon. Our first swim event takes place in April with the
swim clinic held at St. Catherine's pool. Our own pool will undergo a few cosmetic renovations
prior to opening in May, and will once again be managed by SCMG. Kudos to Dave Lundgren
who manages all of those contract negotiations for the pool, and oversees their work.
I am honored to serve SRA this year and to help steward, for a short time, this place my family
and I have come to love. If there is ever anything I can do for you please feel free to get in
touch.
Yours- David

Swim Club Management Group of
Richmond
Guest Policy
Swim Club Management Group of Richmond
returns this year to manage our pools and
entrance gate. We are excited to have many of
our hardworking guards return and to welcome
some new faces to the pool. Please let the guards
know of any concerns you have about the safety
or cleanliness of the pools, but remember: Do
not talk to the guards when they are on the
lifeguard stands unless they have spoken to you
first. This is a safety concern, and safety comes
first at Southampton.
We encourage you to invite a friend or neighbor
to SRA. Guest fees are $5 per person, regardless
of age. Guests must abide by the rules and if
unable to swim must have an adult member
present.
Pool Entrance Gate
Lost & Found
SCMG gate guards manage the pool entrance. A
guard will ask your name, check it against a list
of paid members, and ask you to sign in. Guards
also collect and monitor our $5 guest passes. All
members and guests must sign in. This helps us
determine busy and slow times, as well as our
members’ needs.
Items left in Lost and Found for more than a few
weeks will be donated to a thrift store. Label
towels and children’s clothing with a Sharpie
marker to make it easier to connect you to your
missing items.
Lifeguard Appreciation Week
Help us show our fantastic, hardworking
lifeguards how much we appreciate them on
June 29–July 5. Our guards love goodies and
snack bar accounts, as well as gift cards to local
cafes and restaurants.
Family Night Thursdays
Join us for a great time Family Nights on Thursdays, June 18–Sept. 3, 6–9 p.m. Pack a picnic dinner or
purchase one from the snack bar, and let the kids have fun with their friends and big floats in the pool.
This is the only time during the pool season that large floats are permitted in the pool.
Pool Parties
SRA is a wonderful, safe place to host a birthday or special event during regular pool hours. Each nonmember guest is only $5—the best deal in town! Due to high volume in the summer and the importance
of safety, all pool birthdays and events must be arranged through the office; just give us a call at 272-7401
to make sure your date isn’t too crowded.

After-Hours Pool Rental

Adult Swim Conditioning
For the 13th year, SRA offers evening adult swim clinics led by Collegiate Head Swim Coach Mike Stott.
To register, or for answers to questions, please contact Mike at michaeljstott@comcast.net or 288-8808;
(cell (921-8808). $90 per eight class session; Drop-ins welcome at $13 per class.
If you have been thinking about joining either of the SRA Adult Swim Clinics stop thinking and JUST
DO IT! The Stroke Clinic will focus on correct technique and how to swim the four basic strokes of
freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. If you are a confirmed lap swimmer or a lap swimmer
hopeful this session will get you going. Two other reasons to get on board might be to better understand
what your children do on the swim team. Or perhaps you have visions of entering a KILLER Family
Relay on the 4th of July. For those of you who once learned to swim and want a refresher the first eight
sessions of Clinic 1 (Stroke Clinic) are for you. What was taught years ago is not what is being taught
now.
4
Session One: Stroke Clinic, June 14—June 30
We’ll have excellent demonstration by some of the state’s best swimmers. No time trials unless requested.
Among our many graduates are Dabney Carr, Elizabeth and Alex, Bolin, Jane Nelson, Parker Hale,
Johanna Minich, Wiley Hunnicutt and Caroline Kettlewell-Sites. Open to all levels of swimmers.
Dates & Time: 7–8 p.m., Sun., June 14; Tues., June 16; Thurs., June 18; Sun., June 21; Tues., 23,
Thurs. June 25, Sun. June 28, Tues. June 30. Meet at the Upper Pool rain or shine. Note that we may
go as late as 8:30 on any of these classes.
If you have fins, bring them. If you do not, email me your shoe size and I will bring fins for you.
Session Two: Conditioning Clinic, July 5--21
Focus is on conditioning and gaining speed. Last year’s attendees made considerable gains in their
aerobic capacity and, aside from some snide remarks to the coach, appeared to be appreciative of the
opportunity to stretch themselves in a supervised swimming setting.
Dates & Time: 7–8 p.m., Sun. July 5; Tues. July 7; Thurs., July 9. Sun. July 12; Tues. July 14;
Thurs. July 16; Sun. July 19; Tues., July 21. Meet at the Upper Pool rain or shine. Note that we
may go as late as 8:30 on any of these classes. Again, if you have fins, bring them. If you do not,
email me your shoe size and I will bring fins for you.
Adult Private Swim Lessons
In recent years, SRA adults have asked for private lessons (adult or summer league swimmers) when
clinic times have not suited work and family schedules. Collegiate Head Swim Coach Mike Stott offers
these at $30 per half hour. Please contact him at michaeljstott@comcast.net or 288-8808, (cell) 921-8808.
AGES 4-10 Beginner Swim Clinic, June 16–July 9
We’re so excited to have our own George Moore return for the fourth year to lead this eight-session
clinic. For children ages four to 10, the clinic is designed to improve water safety and introduce and
reinforce proper stroke technique. George will be assisted by a staff of senior SRA swim team members
who will work with the children in the pool to make this a productive and fun experience. This clinic is
intended for children who do not participate on swim team. Limited to 30 children. Register in the SRA
office, but make checks payable to George Moore. $85.

Dates & Time: 2:15–3:15 p.m., Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, June 16–June 25,
Tuesday, July 7 and Wednesday, July 8. Thursday, July 9 will serve as a thunderstorm make-up
day. No class the week of July 4.
Swim Lessons with SCMG(1-2 students)
SCMG believes in providing children with a positive environment in which they can feel comfortable and
learn basic water safety. We feel that through patience, encouragement, and frequent repetition of skills,
your child will have a fun, safe and rewarding swimming experience.
Classes are held Monday – Thursday for 30 minutes for the four day session. Semi-Private(2
students) $60 per session(per student); Private: $100 per session. Payment is required at the time
of registration and 72 hour notice required for refund.

SCMG Class Descriptions:
Tadpole I and II (Ages 3-6)*:
*Classes may be combined.
Tadpole I class is for a child who may be apprehensive in the water or who has never had swim lessons.
Participants may not be comfortable with their face getting wet. This class introduces new little swimmers
to the pool and helps them become acquainted with the pool and the use of flotation devices. Little
swimmers will develop safe water habits in a fun and encouraging environment.
Tadpole II class is for the beginner swimmer who is comfortable in the water but has not yet mastered
certain skills. Participants should be comfortable well adjusted to the water (don’t mind getting their face
wet) and eager to learn kicking and progressive paddle-stroke. Additionally they learn more about pool
safety and developing independent floating skills.
Minnows I and II (Ages 6-9)*:
Minnow I swimmers learn front and back floating skills, the paddle-stroke, flutter kick, elementary
backstroke, personal safety and the use of flotation devices. This class is for the school-age swimmer who
has never had swim lessons.
Minnows II swimmers continue to build confidence in their abilities by practicing paddle-stroke skills,
floating, and rotary breathing without the aid of flotation devices. Children learn new skills such as
treading water and survival floating. Lead-up strokes to the front crawl, back-stroke, sidestroke,
breaststroke and elementary backstroke are also introduced at this level. Students must be comfortable in
the deep end and be able to swim 25 yards without a flotation device.
Dolphin (Ages 7 and up)*: In the Dolphin level, children refine the front crawl, backstroke,
elementary backstroke, sidestroke and breaststroke. The butterfly is also introduced at this level. Dolphin
swimmers continue to build endurance by swimming up to 200 yards. Stroke technique and endurance are
emphasized.
Stroke Clinic (Ages 8 and up): is an advanced level where students focus on stoke enhancements and
more endurance. Open turns and treading water with rotary kick are introduced to students at this level.
Students are also introduced to three new strokes: the inverted breaststroke, the trudgen crawl and the
over arm sidestroke.

Swim Team
Swim team practice schedule, calendar and general information are in this section as well as online.
About Practice
Many parents worry about how summer camps and vacations will affect swim practice. Please let the
coaches know if your child will be away from practice for an extended time. Though we always
recommend regular age group practice attendance—it helps your child make friends with teammates and
become a better swimmer—we understand that situations arise where flexibility helps. Please let us know
if you have short-term conflicts. Our coaches will be as flexible as possible and can arrange for your child
to attend another practice for a short time.
Registration
Register your child for swim team by mail, in the SRA office (see office hours, p. 2) or during practice.
There are three forms to complete for registration: 1) the registration form, 2) the SRA medical
release/waiver/meet sheet, 3) the JRAC waiver. Please make sure you complete all three in order to
register your swimmer(s).
You can also register and pay online via PayPal at our website (www.sra-fun.org). Please note: If you pay
online, you must still complete the necessary forms and turn them into the SRA office.
If you have questions about registration, Kristen Mullins is often available during afternoon practice. All
swimmers must be registered by May 29 in order to participate in the first meet on June 8.
Fees:
5-16 year olds
 On or before May 29th – $100
 After May 29th – $105
Families with 3 or more swimmers
 On or before May 29th – first two swimmers are $100 each. Third and Fourth swimmer $50/each.
 After May 29th – First two swimmers $105.00 each. Third and Fourth swimmer $55/each.
Swimmers who are Seniors (ages 17-18) get a special rate of $25.00 each.
7
Do You Have a New Swimmer?
To join the team, a child must be five years old and able to swim one length of the pool without
assistance. Children new to the team (who haven’t participated in our spring clinic and who haven’t been
on another swim team) must have an assessment session with a swim coach to be certain that he or she is
ready for the practice environment. Our 2015 assessment will be Sunday, May 10, 3:00 p.m., at the St.
Catherine’s Kenny Center pool. Our coaches will work with children one-on-one to determine readiness.
Please contact Kristen Mullins (kristenmullins14@gmail.com) if you plan to attend. If your child isn’t
able to attend this session, contact Kristen to arrange another time during the first week of practice. We
ask that a new swimmer not participate in practice until the coaches have had an opportunity to meet and
work with your child. Please note that the St. Catherine’s pool is heated; SRA’s pool can be chilly for
little ones that first week!

Please welcome Kallie to SRA! She graduated from Arizona State University in 2010 with her B.S. in
Kinesiology and is working towards her Masters in Occupational Therapy at Milligan College. She had a
15-year swimming career, including 2 trips to the Olympic Trials (2008 & 2012) for the 100 and 200
backstroke. She has extensive coaching experience, including an assistant coaching position at Poseidon
Swimming.
Lauren Goldberg
Assistant Swim Coach
We also welcome Lauren to our SRA family. She is a graduate of Trinity Episcopal School and Virginia
Tech, where she got her degree in Spanish. She is currently attending Bon Secours Memorial College of
Nursing. She swam for 14 years at Bon Air, coached for Willow Oaks, and is currently coaching the St.
Catherine’s and St. Christopher’s varsity swim teams.
Milo Wilson

Milo will return for his third year coaching at SRA. He has been swimming for Southampton since he was
5 and was among our celebrated seniors last summer.
Ben Cherry
Assistant Swim Coach

team and pool time with Poseidon and NOVA.
Elizabeth Ratliff
Assistant Swim Coach(Mites/Midgets)
Elizabeth has been swimming at her beloved SRA since she was five years old and we are excited to have
her join the coaching staff – focusing on the Mites and Midgets. Elizabeth will be graduating from
Maggie Walker Governor’s School and then heads off to Duke in the fall. Don’t be surprised if you see
Elizabeth singing beside the pool – just for fun or maybe the National Anthem.
Sarah Shaw
Assistant Swim Coach(Mites/Midgets)
Sarah has been a Southampton Swordfish since the age of nine. While we are sad that this will be her last
season swimming, we are thrilled to have her partnering with Elizabeth in working with the Mites and
Midgets. In the past Sarah has assisted at our spring swim clinics as well as teaching Beginning
Swimmer clinics. This fall, she will be pursuing a business degree from Liberty University.

Tennis
Welcome Tennis Pro Jamie Morgan!
Our former pro, Greg Cooper, has accepted a position at MAC. While this news saddens us at
Southampton, we all wish Greg only the best in his new career pursuits. The brevity of his tenure is surely
eclipsed by the invigorated, re-energized tennis culture it leaves behind at SRA. And we are ready to kick
off the summer tennis season with two hours daily of tennis fun!
We are pleased to announce that Jamie Morgan will be taking over as Head Tennis Pro at Southampton.
Some of you may remember Jamie as he taught for a short time at SRA many years ago. Since then he
has continued to enhance his resume in the Richmond area, serving as a creator for Junior tennis programs
in Richmond and as the assistant coach for the University of Richmond teams.
Originally hailing from California, Jamie completed his junior college career at Sacramento City College
(where he was nationally ranked), then moved on to play for UC-Davis. After college, Jamie obtained his
USPTA certification and started teaching and training ATP players at the Gorin Tennis Academy under
the tutelage of Vitaly Gorin.
In 2004 Jamie moved to Richmond to start a job with Westwood Racquet Club and then Kanawha
Recreation Association, where he quickly started to realize the need for growth of Junior tennis programs
in Richmond. In addition to founding and continuing to run Tennis4Life (a program geared to identifying
and training local Juniors who want to advance their tennis skills), Jamie has been the assistant coach for
the University of Richmond women's team for 9 years and has also served as the assistant for the Spider

This four-day camp for the younger yoga student requires no prior experience. Students will practice

students make various craft projects that encourage them to become more aware of their surroundings and
themselves; in the third, they slow down, enjoy a story that ties to that day’s theme and spend a few
moments in quiet relaxation.

Summer Reading — Fun and Crafty Kids still enjoy reading during the summer.
The following sessions are free and open to elementary kids who are interested in chapter books —
whether they listen to them or independently read them. Kids should arrive having finished the book.
All sessions are Thursdays from 2:30-3:45. Snacks provided.
Session 1, June 25: From Obert Skye’s series The Creature From My Closet kids can read all or one of
the following: Potterwookie, Wokenstein, and/or Pinocula. We will discuss what the creatures are and
then design a creature that may come out of their closet imagination. This book series is especially fun for
chapter book readers who like some graphics.
Session 2, July 2: For the mystery lovers, Jonathan Auxier’s The Night Gardener. This story is a great
read aloud but your kids may read ahead once they are hooked into the story. Kids will discuss elements
that create mystery for them. Kids will also get a chance to build a garden element of their own.
Session 3, July 9: Wonder by RJ Palacio offers kids a chance to discuss how they are different and yet
universally human. This book is a great listen on Audible or CD. It is also one that may require tissues.
Adults love this book as much as kids. Parents are welcome. As for crafts, we will have masks that kids
17
can decorate on one side and then write words, with help if needed, to identify the strong traits or
aspirations that we hope we have.
Session 4, July 16: Laura Hilenbrand’s young adult version of Unbroken. Kids will meet to discuss
American POW and hero Louie Zamperini. Highlights of this session are still in the works.
Murder! Lies! Justice gone awry!
Sarah Koenig’s Serial podcast explores how Adnan Syed may have been wrongly indicted for the
murder of his former girlfriend Hae Min Lee. Koenig has conversations with Syed and many others
involved in the case, including legal experts. She explores whether Syed may or may not have been the
killer despite being incarcerated. Koenig introduced many people to the concept of listening to weekly
podcasts to follow a story in ways reminiscent of previous generations as they sat together around their
radio listening to serial programs. You can find the podcasts for free at this link: http://serialpodcast.org
If you have not listened, tune in! You will be riveted as you do your dishes and or drive to swim
practice.
Once you finish, there is more. Come talk about the case and the podcasts with other teens and
adults at SRA on June 30 from 6-8 p.m. Johanna Minich and Susie Hudgins will lead the discussions
which are open to anyone who has listened and wants to discuss the case of Adnan Syed. We will have
snacks and drinks while gathering in the clubhouse living room to discuss this series. Here are some
questions we may explore: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/12/18/serial-finale_n_6348340.html or
http://www.slate.com/topics/s/serial.html. Please RVSP by noon on the day of the event so that we know
how much food to bring.
