The Task
For this task you are going to write a letter to Mr Phil Knight who is the founder of the American
sportswear company NIKE. In the past Nike have been criticised for the way in which their
products are made. They have been accused of getting their clothing and sports goods made very
cheaply in Asian ‘sweatshops’ in order to increase their profits. In your letter you will explain why
you are concerned about the way in which their goods are made. You may wish to include the
following things in your letter –





What you have found out in class about the working conditions of Nike factory employees.
Information you have found out about the wages the workers receive.
Information on the profits which the company Nike make each year.
Reasons why you think the company is being run in an unfair way.
Possible suggestions as to what could be done to improve the way Nike runs its business.
Your teacher will help you by completing work with you beforehand which will give you a good idea
about the company Nike and how its sports goods are made. You will also watch the short film
‘Behind The Swoosh’ which looks at a Nike factory in Indonesia. However, you need to remember
that when looking at websites, they may be biased towards a certain point of view, so be careful
when using information in your letter.
As this is a mainly written task, you need to check your spelling, punctuation and grammar
BEFORE you hand your work in. Another way to improve your work is by including some
Geographical words which might be used in this topic.
