Chemistry XXI Lab Session 1 Working in the CHEM 151 lab. 1 Today’s Agenda Meet your classmates and your teacher; Review course goals and structure; Consent and diagnostic; Chemistry XXI Safety orientation and training; Recognizing chemical substances; Working in the lab. Required tasks. 2 Let’s Meet Get together in groups of 3 or 4 people and introduce yourself: Chemistry XXI Tell the people in your group 3 things you think they should know about you. Discuss, as a group, whether you like/dislike working in the lab. The person that was born the farthest from this lab should be ready to introduce her/himself and the rest of the people in their group. Let’s Meet Chemistry XXI Jenine Maeyer jrcole@u.arizona.edu OC 218 Chemistry 151 Chemistry XXI Chemical thinking allows us to answer many fundamental questions about: Substances Processes In our world. 5 Chemistry 151 The course is designed to help you develop ways of thinking useful to answer these types of fundamental questions: Analysis What is this? Chemistry XXI Synthesis How do I make it? Transformation How do I change it? Modeling How do I explain it? Human Relevance The answers to these types of questions are of central importance in many areas of our personal, professional, and social life. Environmental Issues Analysis What is this? Chemistry XXI Transformation How do I change it? Synthesis How do I make it? Life and Medicine Energy Sources Modeling How do I explain it? Materials Design Chemistry 151 You are expected to develop lab skills and ways of thinking that can be applied to explain, predict, and even design the properties and behavior of many relevant systems. Global Warming Drugs Nanomaterials Chemistry XXI Alternatives Ozone Hole Food Polymers Environmental Issues Life and Medicine Energy Sources Materials Design Laboratory Work All you need to know about the structure and academic expectations of this Chemistry Lab is posted in the following website: Learn About the 151 Lab On-line Chemistry XXI http://quiz2.chem.arizona.edu/genchemlabs/151syllabus Let’s review the most important points! Informed Consent Chemistry XXI Your section of CHEM 151 has been selected to pilot test a new curriculum approach. In order to evaluate the success of the project, your activities in lab and lecture may be observed on a regular basis by people associated with the project. We ask you that you consent to participate in this project (observations, and voluntary focus groups and interviews). What Do You Know? To help us craft the best possible class for your needs we need to know what you know today. Chemistry XXI To this end we will now administer a background knowledge assessment. Chemistry XXI Diagnostic Assessment This instrument is to be reused in every class taught in this room. Please do not mark on the form. Your responses will be tallied using a Scantron machine. Please mark your answers carefully. Enter your name where asked. Leave a blank space between your last and first names. Diagnostic Assessment Chemistry XXI Enter your student ID number. It MUST be a nine-digit number. If it is not entered correctly, your grade will not be recorded. If your ID number begins with the letter S, enter a 0 (zero) for the S. When done, your answer sheet should have nine filled in bubbles with the last column blank. In the space titled “PHONE NUMBER” enter your three digit SECTION NUMBER for the “AREA CODE”. Leave the remaining space blocks empty. Let’s Start Let’s take a break Chemistry XXI (5 minutes) Lab Safety Chemistry XXI Chapter ONE in the lab manual. It is expected that you will 1) Learn how to be safe in a chemical lab (what you know); 2) Develop (and demonstrate) safe laboratory habits (what you do). You will be evaluated on the quality of your laboratory habits and practices over the course of the semester. Chemistry XXI Safety orientation video The Safety Agreement Chemistry XXI You must agree to abide by our rules and regulations before we will allow you to work in our labs. http://d2l.arizona.edu Let’s take a safety tour of our Lab! Chemistry XXI Recognizing Chemical Substances In this lab, you will be using a variety of chemical substances. For your own safety, YOU MUST recognize and name them based on their chemical formulas. Nomenclature Every Chemical MUST have a name that is 1. Unambiguous 2. Minimum number of characters in a systematic name Why? Chemistry XXI O MDMA N Ecstasy O Why is this better? C12H17NO2 N,N,2-trimethyl-1,3-benzodioxole-5-ethanamine Some Trends The following compounds are called “BINARY COMPOUNDS” because their formula include two different elements Chemistry XXI HBr HCl CO N2 O PCl3 HI CO2 N2O4 PCl5 H 2S CBr4 N2O5 SF6 HBr HCl CO N2O HI CO2 N2O4 N2O5 PCl3 PCl5 H 2S CBr4 SF6 What do these compounds have in common? Chemistry XXI Non-Metals They are composed of NON-METALS and said to be COVALENT or MOLECULAR COMPOUNDS Some Trends Let’s look for a trend or system in naming binary molecular compounds: Chemistry XXI Formula CO CO2 CBr4 N2O N2O4 N2O5 PCl3 SF6 Name carbon monoxide carbon dioxide carbon tetrabromide dinitrogen monoxide dinitrogen tetroxide dinitrogen pentoxide phosphorus trichloride sulfur hexafluoride What are the rules for naming these molecular compounds? Can you see the pattern? Rules for Molecular Compounds 1. The name of the element with the lower group number (furthest to the left) in the periodic table is the first word in the name (CO, carbon ….) 2. If in the same group, the one with the higher period number (furthest down) goes first (SO2, sulfur…). Chemistry XXI 3. The second element is named with the root and the suffix –ide (CS2, carbon disulfide). 4. Use Greek numeral prefixes to indicate the number of atoms of each element (use in first word only if more than one atom) (CS2, carbon disulfide, CO, carbon monoxide, N2O2, dinitrogen dioxide) NaCl BaI2 KBr CaO Chemistry XXI Metals MgCl2 Al2O3 What do these compounds have in common? Metalloids These are IONIC compounds. They are composed of METALS and NON-METALS Non-metals Some Trends Let’s look for a trend or system in naming binary ionic compounds: Chemistry XXI Formula NaCl KBr MgCl2 BaI2 CaO Al2O3 Name sodium chloride potassium bromide magnesium chloride barium iodide calcium oxide aluminum oxide What are the rules for naming these ionic compounds? Can you see the pattern? Rules for Ionic Compounds 1. The name of the metallic element is the first word in the name (NaCl, sodium ….) Chemistry XXI 2. The nonmetallic element is named with the root and the suffix –ide (NaCl, sodium chloride). 3. No Greek numeral prefixes are used to indicate the number of atoms of each element. Your Turn Name these compounds: S2Cl2 SrBr2 K2O SiF4 Chemistry XXI Write out the formula of these compounds: Sulfur trioxide Tetraarsenic tetrasulfide What is WRONG with these names? MgCl2 monomagnesium dichloride BaF2 barium diflouride CaO calcium monoxide Al2S3 dialuminum trisulfide Cl2O5 dichloride hexoxide For more: Consult your lecture text, Tro p 92-100 Chemistry XXI Take Five Japanese businessmen taking a break at an oxygen bar. Chemistry XXI Overview of a Typical Lab Announcements and introduction. Small and whole Group discussion: Students will develop a plan of action. Perform experimental procedure. Small and group discussion: Students will evaluate results and determine what to do next. Process will repeat until an acceptable answer is obtained. Small and group discussion: Conclusions and reflections. Chemistry XXI Solving a Mystery What questions would you like to answer? Chemistry XXI Resources Lab Manual Group Formation Chemistry XXI Work stations in the lab are arranged four to a bench; All students working at one bench will be a group; Each work station has an assigned locker; When you check into a locker you are also joining a group. Chemistry XXI Getting Ready For our next section you need to: Complete all pre-lab assignments for Experiment 1 (Introduction to Measurement) posted in D2L; Complete your “safety agreement” in D2L; Complete the “Interests in Chemistry” survey posted in D2L. Write at least one beginning question for the first lab; Print out a report form and bring it to lab. Bring at least one laptop with Excell in it per team. Chemistry XXI Our Next Lab How do we identify an unknown substance? The Challenge Imagine that you are employed by a recycling firm.
