THIRD NINE WEEKS LESSON PLANS 2014-2015
January 5-9, 2015
Students will be given the characteristics of persuasive and argumentative
and have to find the main similarity and difference in the two types of
writing.
Students will evaluate different pieces to determine if they are persuasive
or argumentative. They will read a variety of pieces including one from
Jackie Robinson that will be using next week for another activity as well.
They will highlight the claim, reasons, and evidence. We will also find a
counterclaim and a call to action when these are present. We will discuss
the purpose for each of these.
Students will trace an argument to see both sides of one topic. This will
allow us to discuss strengths and weaknesses and for them to see both sides
to the same argument.
Students will do a four corners activity in which I will give them different
scenarios, and they have to determine how they would react to the situation
by going to the corner of the room that corresponds to their letter choice.
They will discuss the situation with the other students that had the same
response.
They will have Writer's Response #8 in which they evaluate the four
corners activity and their own choices they made.
Students will complete and art activity in which they personify "injustice."
They will complete a chart in which they determine colors, feature, symbols,
etc. to represent certain characteristics about injustice. They will draw
these features to make the face for injustice. They will then write a
narrative from injustice's point of view in which they describe themselves
and the features on the artwork.
January 12-16, 2015
Students will view an introductory video to the Montgomery Bus Boycott
which will introduce our book, Freedom Walkers. We will read the
introduction and first two chapters this week. Students will be given
vocabulary and questions to go along with the reading that they must
complete.
Students will complete Writer's Response #9 after viewing video and
reading the book introduction.
Students will finish tracing the argument, and we will discuss this in detail.
This is to prepare them for their own upcoming argumentative writing piece.
Students will write a narrative piece from a different point of view in
response to the Jackie Robinson speech we listened to and evaluated last
week.
January 19-23, 2015
Finish Section 1 in Freedom Walkers. This is the Introduction and Chapters
1-3. We will discuss in detail, and the lime green question sheet will be
turned in on Wednesday of this week.
Students will complete a graphic organizer with claims about Claudette
Colvin and Rosa Parks. Students will have to show proof "for" and proof
"against" the proposed claims. We will have a class discuss to debate the
two claims.
Students will have a formative on Thursday. It will be multiple choice and
short answer based on Section 1 of the Freedom Walkers book.
Students will look at the BenchMark Test that they took on the computer in
November. I will show them sample examples of the short answer part.
Students will have to evaluate them, and then rewrite a response. They will
then grade them again with the rubric. This is to help them with the
computer-based test that is coming up.
January 26-30, 2015
Students will view two images from the civil rights time period. They will
write down what they notice each time they view it. They will view it three
times for 25 seconds, 20 seconds, and then 15 seconds. They will determine
the overall purpose and meaning of the picture as well as state a claim based
on the picture.
Students will receive the next set of questions for Section 2 of Freedom
Walkers. This will be Chapters 4-6. This will be completed in class.
February 2-6, 2015
We will look at the second short answer question from the November
BenchMark. They will have to evaluate student samples, and rewrite their
own responses.
Students will read and listen to the first speech by Martin Luther King, Jr.
This was given at the Holt Baptist Church, and it was the first speech of his
as a civil rights activist. This speech encouraged the community to continue
the bus boycott.
Students will continue reading and discussing Section 2 of the Freedom
Walkers book. The handout will be due this week around Tuesday for a
formative grade.
Students will have a formative on Section 2 of the Freedom Walkers book on
Friday the 6th.
