Grade 10 Religion Advocating for Justice: An Internet Research Project Assignment: You are to research a particular person who has founded a movement particularly aimed at bringing change to the unjust structures of society. Using at least three sources you will be required to complete the questions and then prepare a presentation that reflects the cause your person is fighting for – and illustrates his or her main arguments. An equal portion of the grading will be based on your rough notes, your presentation and your final one page biography/ summary of your person. Research: All research must be completed on the Internet. However, a central aim of this assignment is to teach skills relating to Internet literacy. You will be graded on not simply on the information you collect but also on how you are able to critically examine and creatively use information. It is not acceptable to cut and paste information. You must read and take only information that is relevant to the assignment. Reading the discussion questions beforehand will be useful. Be aware that not all sites on the Internet are reliable – ensure that you are getting information that is both credible and consistent…compare your three sources! Step 1: First you are required to gather information about your given person and their attempt to challenge injustice. This should be titled “Notes on the Topic of… one for each web site. Make sure to record the web site address! Step 2: Once you have gathered information from your three sources you are to answer the discussion questions provided on the back of the sheet. Step 3: You are then to create an electronic presentation advertising/ arguing for the particular change this person is working towards. The “advertisement” should articulate the main argument the person is putting forth. In addition, you may want to answer the questions given on the next page. Step 4: You are to prepare a one page summary of your information and use it to present to the class. Step 5: You will present your electronic presentation to the class on a date to be determined. You will hand in the “Notes…” task, the one page summary and the discussion questions you have answered. What is the underlying motivation for your person’s commitment to his or her issue? 4. How does this person seek to achieve their goals? How effective to you think this approach is? Why? 5. What symbols are used and/ or connected to the movement? Are they effective? 6. How is this movement connected to the faith journey of the person involved? 7. Do you think this movement achieved its goals? Why or Why not? Use evidence to support your answer. 8. If you answered “no” to question 7 – what needs to happen for this vision to become complete? What advice would you give this person? 9. How does this person inspire you? 10. How is this movement connected to others (Poverty issues, environment, racism, etc.)? This is the bigger picture question!
