1)What types of departmentalization are being used? Explain your
choices.
Starbucks is known across the world, they have to deal with different
cultures and work ethics. This is where the international operations is
greatly needed, having this you know that when you walk in to
Starbucks anywhere it will be the same. This is made possible with
the use of departmentalization. The two that I found where
geographical and functional.
Geographical- With geographical departmentalization, this allows the
company to deal with the "obese" size of the company. By having this
in place this has given them presidents in Canada (President of
Starbucks Canada), USA (President of Starbucks Coffee USA) and
Internationally with the President of Starbucks coffee international
and senior vice-president of coffee and global procurement.
Functional- With this they can assign different jobs for to insure that
everything that takes place is done to pure perfection.
3)What examples of the six organizational structural elements do you
see discussed in the case? Describe.
Departmentalization- As said in question 1, this helps the company
decide which jobs and operations should be put together to work on.
Ex. Audit and compliance.
Decentralization- This is what makes Starbucks so successful. They
try and get advice from all levels of employment and give the freedom
to make there own decisions within the Starbucks rules.
Span of Control- Having district managers visit 8-10 stores and
having the right number of employees a manager can handle to be
the most productive.
Formalization- Starbucks does a great job with formalizing their jobs.
Through training it shows that the company will not let their
employees on the "dance floor" without their proper training.
Chain of Command- In the case is says that Starbucks needed to
work on its communication but it is effective on delivering info. from
baristas to store managers to district managers…. till it gets to
Howard.
Cross-Functional teams- With having baristas making the drinks and
having managers look over them, this allows the two to work together
to produce the best product possible.
12) Which of the company's Guiding Principles affect the organizing
function of Management? Explain how the one you chose would
effect how Starbucks how managers deal with: a. structural issues b.
communication issues c. HRM issues.
"Embrace diversity as an essential component in the way we do
business"
Structural Issues- by having a diverse staff, this means you have to
deal with different cultures and adapt to them.
Communication issues- this will we make things interesting because
in different cultures there is different ways of communicating,
Starbucks will have to train the new employees to communicate the
way the company does.
HRM issues- With this you can provide international employees
hotlines to ask questions on their own time to answer their questions
that they might not have thought of when they where on the job.
What do you think it is like to work at Starbucks?
I think it would be a very positive work environment to work in. With
the training you would receive would look good on your resume for
future jobs. Every Starbucks I go to there is never a unhappy
employee , everyone of them are up beat and having a good time at
work. This comes off on to the customers to give them a relaxed
environment.
