Puritan
• Protestants who, during the 1600’s want to

Separatists
• Protestants who, in the 1600’s, wanted to
LEAVE the Anglican Church to found their own
churches. (pg. 77)
Pilgrim
• Separatists who journeyed to the colonies
during the 1600’s for a religious purpose.

Dissent
• Disagreement with or opposition to an
opinion. (pg. 76)
Mercantilism
• Theory that a state’s or nation’s power
depended on its wealth. (pg. 59, 109)

Export
• To sell good abroad (out of the country)

• To buy good from a foreign market. (pg. 109)
Tidewater
• A region of flat, low lying plains along the

• A region of hills and forests west of the

Democratic
• Relating to, appealing to, or available to the
broad masses of people

Representative
• A person chosen or appointed to act or speak
for another or others, in particular.

• Believed that every individual had an “inner
light” that could guide him or her to salvation.

• Person opposed to the use of war or violence

Persecute
• To treat someone harshly because of that

• The activity of buy or selling especially on a

• A trade route that exChanged goods between

• A document that gives the holder the right to
