Mathematics “Flipped Classroom”
Students will experience a different classroom culture this year in math. Students will be assigned weekly instructional videos that they must watch at home or before and after school. These videos are instructional examples of the content and are no more than 15 minutes long. The student is required to take Cornell style notes over the videos. These notes are part of the student’s mathematics portfolio and will be checked in class. Usually videos will be assigned on Wednesday so the student has 5 days to watch and take notes. Student “practice” of math will be in class. We will practice through independent and group work utilizing peers and instructors as academic aids. Weekly students will have the following homework:
Video lesson – watch and take Cornell Notes (Due Monday)
Think Through Math Lesson – Must be complete before the Friday Assessment

All class and home assignments make up the students mathematic portfolio and must be complete before grades are released for a grading period.
Mathematical Portfolio
The Portfolio includes:
Assessments
Unit Plan
Instructional video Cornell notes
Warm-ups
All classwork
Exit Quizzes
Assessments
Formative Exit Quizzes:
Weekly, students will take formative exit quizzes to assess their growing knowledge of the unit. These quizzes are a view of their need to practice more, study or seek tutoring. The grade on this quiz is 40% weighted and cannot be changed by retesting.
Summative Assessments:
Unit assessment grades are summative and a measure of the student’s knowledge of the subject.
Summative assessments are 60% weighted. Most assessments will be administered on Friday and grades posted over the weekend.
Re-test Policy:
Students may re-assess one Unit Exam per grading period. Students must attend show up before or after school already prepared to re-test; so students must make their OWN preparations to watch review videos, attend tutoring and complete corrective assignments before they enter for a retest. The re-test grade stands…it is the most current reflection of the student’s knowledge of the subject.
Late Work Policy:
NO SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT UNTIL ALL PRELIMINARY WORK IS COMPLETE!
Unit Portfolio (Unit Plan, Cornell Notes, Warm-ups, Classwork and Exit Quizzes)
Think Through Math Lesson
Absent Policy:
In the event that a student is absent, students are responsible to get the notes from a peer or the teacher upon returning to school. Classwork and any other portfolio assignments will be in the absentee file.
Academic Honesty:
All academic work completed in and outside of class is to be the reflection of an individual student’s knowledge of the content. Unless stated that the assignment is group work, student’s work must be completed independent of others. Academic dishonesty, cheating, lying and unauthorized assistance on assignments and assessments will not be tolerated. In the event that academic dishonesty occurs, student will be disciplined by the administrative staff and will be administers a re-test.
