Ambassador Rufus Gifford Ambassador Daniel Carmon Before doing the homework it's important at this point to discuss FORMAL AND INFORMAL language. We can see from the speeches that more formal language is used. AT THIS POINT STOP AND SHOW THE POWER POINT PRESENTATION ATTACHED Why does Communication matter? Expectations related to communication change as you become an adult. When you use affective communication other people are more likely to: 1. Have a positive impression of you. 2. Take you seriously; relate to you as a peer and an adult. 3. Offer assistance and give you the benefit of the doubt when needed. There are different communication styles: INFORMAL COMMUNICATION Is less rigidly structured Has a more relaxed tone Uses more casual language Places less emphasis on correct grammar and spelling Is used mainly with peers and other people you know well Is more likely to be needed in personal situations FORMAL COMMUNICATION Is more rigidly structured Has a more formal tone Uses more standard language Places higher importance on correct grammar and spelling Is used mainly with non-peers and people you don't know well Is more likely to be needed in business, career or educational situations. Examples of appropriate situations for using each communication style informal mode of communication formal Text message to a friend Email to a professor Verbal-written Birthday card for a relative Resume and cover letter Grocery list English paper Tweet or Facebook status Online discussion board post Skyping with a sibling tutoring VerbalOral/Spoken Family dinner Job interview Socializing at a club meeting In-class presentation Getting to know your Scheduling a doctor's roommate appointment Riding the bus Sitting in class Nonverbal Dinner out with a friend Interacting with customers at work Watching a movie at home Turning in a job application Hugging your mother to say Shaking hands to greet your hello boss HOMEWORK In pairs students mark up the scripts in two colors: a. I am both honored and thrilled to be the next United States Ambassador to your Kingdom of Denmark. The United States and Denmark have enjoyed centuries of peaceful relations and broad cooperation. Having worked closely with President Obama and other leaders, I look forward to being a part of what makes that relationship work. I grew up in coastal Massachusetts and spent several years on the Pacific coast as well while working in the Hollywood film industry. Here in Washington, I like to spend my free time on the water kayaking with my partner, Steven. We can't wait to explore Denmark’s beautiful coastline where we can spend time on the water. We look forward to experiencing Denmark and learning what makes your country so unique, including your healthy lifestyle, your innovative design, your world-class technology and your pragmatic and tolerant society. I believe that the world prospers from the close relationship our countries share and I am committed to creating an even stronger strategic partnership to meet today's global challenges. During my time in Demark, I will work to expand trade and investment through economic Ambassador Caroline Kennedy Hi, I'm Caroline Kennedy. Welcome to my home in New York City. Ambassador Daniel Carmon Hello. I'm Danny Carmon. I'm the new Israeli Ambassador to India. I am deeply honored that President Obama has asked me to serve as the United States Ambassador to Japan. (I am) very very excited to start my tenure in your wonderful country. Growing up in a family dedicated to public service, I saw how people can come together to solve challenges through commitment, communication, and cooperation. That's something I've tried to do in my own life as well. As ambassador, I look forward to fostering the deep friendship, strategic alliance and economic partnership between our countries. I am fortunate to have studied Japanese history and culture and to have visited your beautiful country. When I was 20, I accompanied my uncle, Senator Edward Kennedy, on a trip to Hiroshima. It left me with a profound desire to work for a better more peaceful world. A few years later, my husband Ed and I returned to Nara in Kyoto on our honeymoon. Since that time, I've seen firsthand how American and Japanese people are bound by common values. We share a commitment to freedom, human rights, and the rule of law. When I was a kid I had no idea I would go into the diplomatic service as my parents did. But looking back to those wonderful years, I can tell you that in some way or another I did prepare myself without knowing it. When our founding fathers came from all over the world, they did bring this country to what it stands for now as a very technological country, a very advanced country. (and) I think that even as a kid I understood this and this was part of my conversation with my friends. I like to brag about Israel and what it stands for. And when I was a very junior diplomat, I took part in the Israeli delegation to the Camp David Summit. I felt I was part of an historical event. During my service in Buenos Aries I had a very tragic encounter with terrorism. On the 17th of March 1992, a bomb exploded in our embassy in Buenos Aires, destroying the embassy. Twenty-nine people were killed. An Israeli embassy, a symbol of Israel, destroyed. For me personally, it was a tragedy because I lost my wife there. My five kids lost their mother. I decided, together with my kids, to continue. It’s not something that you forget, but it's something that you learn to live with when you look at things that you can do. cooperation, and will continue to strengthen our ties with Greenland and the Faro Islands. My goal as ambassador is to build on the proud traditions of mutual respect and close partnership. I look forward to learning more and to making new friends. As an author, an educator and attorney and as a mother, I’ve learned that we are all teachers and students in our own lives and we can transform the world by helping one another. Ed and I have tried to pass this on to our 3 children, Rose, Tatyana and Jack. I am humbled by the opportunity to represent the United States to one of our greatest allies and closest friends. Together, our two countries have done much good for the world and we can do so much more. Thank you. When I was stationed at the UN in New York, we have initiated and led a few resolutions in the United Nations which highlight Israeli technology in agriculture. It also will share its knowledge of technology, know-how, its experience with other countries. I just finished a few hours ago a 3-year post as the head of Mashav, which is Israel's Agency for International Development Cooperation. Definitely, the main mission really is to cooperate, to share for the well-being of countries that have developmental challenges. I feel that I prepared myself for this climax of coming to India. Meeting so many people, meeting the fabric of Indian society in order to see what is the meeting place and there are so many meeting places between India and Israel.
