REVIEW
As populations grew and culture coalesced, monarchs arose to lead their nations forward in expansion and glory. Some of the monarchs ruled to the benefit of their
people, others rules at their expense. Monarchs became absolute and saw themselves as divinely directed, ruling church, state and people, and solidifying their dynasties
through complex royal marriages.
“The state of monarch is the supremest thing on earth; for kings are not only God’s lieutenants upon earth, and sit upon God’s throne, but even by God himself
they are called God.” James I of England in statement to Parliament, March 21, 1609
“Nothing appears more surprising to those who consider human affairs with a philosophical eye, than the easiness with which many are governed by the few.”
David Hume (1711-1776)
