Oedipus the King A gripping tragedy of how Oedipus fell from being a hero and king to an ill-fated man, as he recognizes his true identity as murderer to his father and husband to his mother. War and Peace Justifiably called the greatest work of fiction in world literature. Formidable in length but thoroughly enjoyable once you get into the story. Its brilliant characterization and narrative power make it read quickly. (But skip the “essay” chapters that Tolstoy inserted into the narrative. Critics agree that this was a mistake by Tolstoy.)
