War and Peace
Justifiably called the greatest work of fiction in world
literature. Formidable in length but thoroughly enjoyable
once you get into the story. Its brilliant characterization and
narrative power make it read quickly. (But skip the “essay”
chapters that Tolstoy inserted into the narrative. Critics
agree that this was a mistake by Tolstoy.) Also read Anna
Karenina, Tolstoy’s other towering masterpiece.
