Q1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge the forms and conventions of real media products? By Luke Whitehouse The film genre that our title sequence conforms to is a thriller movie, this is because of the conventions of a thriller are featured in our opening title sequence. For example the antagonist in our movie is mysterious and hides who he really is by wearing dark clothing and covering up his face, his actions are also done out of revenge and anger. Our films opening sequence takes inspiration from the Heavy Rain and Bourne movies, we wanted them to have small, condensed and light text and have the name of the film in bolder writing so we can show it is more important. We also looked at the opening title sequences for Se7ven and Halloween to help on decide on the order of the titles and also the dark lighting for the settings and backgrounds. Title Frames Frame 1 This is our contact sheet for our opening title sequence. The first frame is the establishing shot of our film, we did this first to show the setting and location of our film. It also has conventions of the thriller genre as the location is quiet and empty which gives that sense of danger and it isn’t very bright either. Frame 2 The second frame is used to introduce to one of the characters as it shows us a full view of this character and gives us ideas of who he is and what is going to happen to him. We can also get ideas about who he is from the costume that he is wearing as it all looks sporty and athletic and could fit in with the setting as a lot of people do exercise in a park. Frame 3 The third frame shows camerawork, editing and more information about the character and as well as this it tells us a key part of the film and why there are a lot of murders in our movie. The camerawork uses a close up of the characters chest as he takes off his coat revealing a football shirt which tells us he is a football fan and plays it too, the shirt also relates to the reason why the antagonist kills all of the people that he does. While the editing is used to reveal one of our opening titles as the character removes his coat. Frame 4 The fourth frame gives us the first appearance and introduction of the antagonist of our film. We can tell this is the antagonist as he is introduced in a room with dark lighting and has his back facing the camera and is wearing a costume that doesn’t allow us to see who he is and creates the mystery and suspense often used in thriller movies. Frame 5 The fifth frame shows the font and style of our titles used during the opening sequence. The more important titles were given a larger size of font than the other opening titles as well as the names of the people or the companies that were a part of making the film. Frame 6 The sixth frame was used to show camerawork in our opening title sequence. When the antagonist jumped from one place to another we started with a long shot to show his location and then used a match on action to show us where his feet landed after he had jumped. Frame 7 The seventh frame was used for special effects we had added to our opening title sequence. While the character was doing exercises we put him and the scene in freeze while at the same time showing the title of who did the editing, when the scene was no longer frozen the title had disappeared and the shot carried on as normal. Frame 8 The eighth frame is our main title which shows the name of our film. We chose to show it hear as we wanted to introduce the name of the movie near the end of the opening title sequence and this is where the music changes so therefore gives it a bit more of a focus and an impact. We chose the name “Sudden Death” for our film as we felt it would be typical of a thriller and also fit in with football which links together all the people that are killed during the film. Frame 9 The ninth and final frame is to show us what the antagonist does throughout the film and involves a murder which is common in a thriller movie. We used this at the end of our opening title sequence to do something different than ending it with the name of the film or a fade out and it can also leave the audience watching want to keep watching and find out what happens next.
