Pros and Cons with various lossy formats
JPEG
JPEG is well suited for Photographic or Continuos Tone Images
Pros: JPEG gives a small file without visual loss and is an International Standard
Cons: Artifacts around edges (blurring) or in smoothly graduated large areas (Banding).
Note: Background removal or changing the background to transparent is not recommended.
GIF

GIF is well suited for 8 bit color images (Icons or Logos), drawings and text
Pros: GIF gives a small file size and uses a lossless compression scheme
Cons: Loss of colors if used for a full color file (pixelation).
Not supported by some applications due to Unisys’
patent claim for the LZW compression scheme.

TIFF
TIFF is a comprehensive format and provides an excellent result for any image type
Pros: TIFF has many flavors and a good combination of compression schemes and color modes.
Cons: Only a subset of the modes are supported in many applications
The many choices makes it more time consuming to secure the optimal result.
