March for Life 2016 OLS 8th grade trip Educational Goals • A sense of patriotism and civic duty as Americans. • How citizens can become involved in shaping and influencing laws and policies. • The workings of our government and the historical roots of our Founding Documents. • An awareness of the sacrifices made by so many to make possible the benefits we enjoy as Americans. • The historical development of the Holocaust and the role ordinary citizens playing in allowing it to occur. Places usually visited • John Paul II Shrine • Arlington Cemetary and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. • Smithsonian Holocaust Museum • The White House • The Supreme Court • Lincoln, Vietnam, and Korean Memorials • Dominican Sisters in Nashville • Basilica of the Immaculate Conception • Our Lady of the Angels Monastery in Alabama • Holy Trinity Catholic Church (the oldest Church in continuous operation in the Nation's Capital) Mass is attended daily • Day 1-We stop in Nashville at Dominican Sisters of St. Cecelia in Nashville, TN for Mass. • Day 2-Mass at the Camp in the evening. • Day 3-Mass at the Camp in the morning. • Day 4-Mass at the Basilica (last year this Mass was attended by 12,000 people, 500 seminarians, 600 priest, 65 bishops, and 7 cardinals) WOW! • Day 5-Mass with Bishop Provost at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Georgetown. • Day 6-Mass at Our Lady of the Angels Monastery in Hanceville, Alabama (Mother Angelica) Week in Review Day 1 leave Lake Charles at 4:00 am. -Stop at 7:00 pm for Mass and tour of Dominican Sisters of Cecelia in Nashville, TN. Day 2 arrive at camp sometime mid morning. -Tour Saint John Paul II Shrine and Arlington Cemetery. -Back to camp around 6 for Mass and Youth Rally at camp. Day 3 Mass at camp in the morning. -Tour Monuments and Memorials & Holocaust Museum. -Rosary Walk to the White House, then pray a chaplet of Divine Mercy in front of White House. Then walk to planned parenthood to pray a rosary or chaplet in front of the clinic. -Tour one of the Smithsonian Museums (last year they went to Air and Space and this year it was Natural Science, each year is different as to which one they choose) -Back to camp for dinner, talks, confession, and adoration. Day 4 -Louisiana Geaux Forth Rally -Tour the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception-Complete a search for symbols of our faith. -March for Life prayer vigil Mass at Basilica -Back to camp late Day 5 -Mass with Bishop Provost at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Georgetown. -March for Life event -Dinner at a Mall on way home Day 6 -Visit and Mass at Our Lady of the Angels Monastery in Hanceville, Alabama. -Arrive home late that evening. **Schedule is tentative and will vary depending on weather and needs of the pilgrims. Geaux Forth Rally • http://www.prolifelouisiana.org/Youth/geauxforth.html 54:55 in video Father Josh (the rapping priest) Bus Ride Louisiana Flash Mob is learned on the bus and done at the Geaux Forth Rally. Videos are watched on the bus and discussed that have a pro-life message or show the value of every life. Prayer and reflection are done on the bus also. You are on the bus a long time. The seminarians from our Diocese that attend the March for Life rotate buses on the trip. Each seminarian gives their story of their journey to the priesthood. They also hang out with the kids on the bus. This year their were 3 seminarians from our Diocese that came. Also 2 of the men that are staying at the Vianney house discerning the priesthood came. Levi pictured here brought his ukulele (like a little guitar) on the bus so they had lots of little jam sessions on the bus. We also had Addison and Andy on our bus at different times. Prices • $600 per person is what the projected cost will be. We are hoping to raise enough money to at least cover the students. • Parents can begin making payments towards theirs in March 2015 (next month). If you pay $60 a month it will be paid by December. • 50% must be paid by October with remaining balance paid by December. • March for Life is usually the end of January, the students will miss 4 days of school. The Monday is usually Martin Luther King day that they are already off. Fundraising • We have a few ideas for fundraising so far. -Sell BBQ dinners the end of this school year Mar, Apr, or May. -Sell BBQ dinners again at the beginning of the school year. August or September -Each student would get the amount they presale towards their trip.
