4th Grade Weekly News November 14th, 2014 Dear Parents, The Wax Museum is right around the corner. Students have been working very hard this week writing their essays. On Tuesday, November 25th we would like for you to join us for the performance. If you child needs assistance getting ready we are asking for you to come in between 1:00-1:15. Students will be getting ready at that time. The performance will begin at 1:30 in the multi-purpose room. WE ARE EXTENDING THE DUE DATE FOR SCHOLASTIC BOOK ORDERS. WE JUST RECEIVED NEW FORMS AND THESE WILL BE IN FRIDAY’S FOLDERS. THE NEW DUE DATE WILL BE FRIDAY NOV. 21! YOU MAY ORDER FROM ANY OF THE FORMS FROM LAST OR THIS WEEK. Upcoming Events/Dates: November 25th- 4th Grade Wax Museum 1:30-3:00pm November 26th- 28th No School Thanksgiving Break Birthdays: Marlayna 13th Accelerated Reader Points for 2nd nine weeks: 12 points=A Curriculum for the week: ELA- For the week of Nov 17 we will be cranking it out in ELA. We will practice using prefixes AND suffixes in the same word; learn and use root words (these are basically stems that are used with prefixes and suffixes). The roots we will cover are cycl, graph, phon, viv, tract, tain, & struct. In addition we will be finishing Sarah Plain and Tall. Students are focusing on finding evidence that supports whether Sarah will stay with the family or go back home to Maine. Before we find out (the last chapter) we will have a class debate using our evidence to support our position. This will be held on Thursday. To get ready, students will write a reading response to organize their thoughts. This will be homework on Wednesday night. Students are busy taking notes this week to prepare for this. Finally, on Friday students will watch the movie version of Sarah Plain and Tall so we can compare and contrast the visual representation of the book with the text (another Common Core standard). Since the following week is so short (Wednesday dismissal) here’s what to expect for the two days we are in school. First, Tuesday will be all about the Wax Museum so we will not be having ELA. On Monday we will be reviewing our comparisons made on Friday (between the text and movie versions of Sarah Plain and Tall). We will also visit the computer lab so students can start becoming comfortable with our new state testing format. It will be totally on the computer this year so I want to help the students learn how to navigate the testing situation so that when the time comes for PARCC (the “new” ISAT) they can use their brain power to show what they know without being hindered with new formats. THEN…..let’s all relax and enjoy our Thanksgiving break. Coming UP……When we return we’ll start a unit on Greek Myths and Non-Fiction. Since Greek myths attempt to explain natural phenomenon, we’ll compare these with Non-Fiction passages that give scientific reasons for the phenomenon. Spelling Words- List 12-shelves, sheep, teeth, elves, mice, calves, spacecraft, jeans, feet, women, men, geese, salmon, series, scissors, halves, oxen, crises, knives, thieves Math- We will continue working in unit 6 which focuses on understanding the division operation, developing a method for dividing whole numbers, and solving division number stories. Students will be shown the "good ole way" of doing long division and they will also learn the common core method of doing partial products. Social Studies / Science- We will continue to work on our Wax Museum projects. Next week students will be going to the computer lab to type their final drafts, they will pick out their lines for the presentation, and they will begin to memorize their lines. Please make sure you are helping your child gather their costumes for the presentations. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us via email. Please continue to check your child’s assignment notebook daily.
