EPC Exhibit 136-6 April 26, 2013 THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS Dewey Section To: Caroline Kent, Chair Decimal Classification Editorial Policy Committee Cc: Members of the Decimal Classification Editorial Policy Committee Karl E. Debus-López, Chief, U.S. General Division From: Michael Panzer, Editor in Chief Dewey Decimal Classification OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc. Re: Editorial Work Plan As noted in EPC Exhibit 135-6, in the past we developed and presented a seven-year work plan following the publication of the full and abridged editions of the DDC. Traditionally the work plan included a review of every schedule and table within the seven-year cycle. Such a plan was presented in EPC Exhibit 122-6 (September 15, 2004) for the period 2004-2011; updated versions followed at subsequent EPC meetings. The primary driver behind our editorial work is the question, how do we create value in the DDC— in the basic system, in mappings and links, in translations, in authorized derivative works, in different forms of representation of the system—to facilitate organization and discovery in the current and future information environment? Therefore, we engaged EPC in a dialog at Meeting 135 about a different approach to developing the editorial work plan in the context of that question. For example, we explored one aspect of the new proposed approach in a presentation on data-driven development using information mined from WorldCat. We expect to continue to give high priority to sci/tech areas, social issues, media, law, education, peoples, languages, geographic areas, historical periods, and terminology throughout the DDC. Taxonomic classifications in the life sciences and special notation for archaeology have been identified by our users as key areas of disciplinary review. We also anticipate receiving suggestions for areas to review from key constituents (e.g., classifiers in the Dewey Section at the Library of Congress, in the British Library, and in the Deutsche National Bibliothek). While we have recommended pulling back from review of every schedule, we expect to review Tables 1-6 and corresponding T1-T6 provisions in the schedules (including in internal tables) on an ongoing basis.
