Our Role:
From Campus to Community
The Volunteer & Service
Learning Center provides
services and servicelearning opportunities for
UVU students, faculty, and
staff. Through programs and
projects in the classroom,
the community and the
world, the Center works to
increase social and cultural
awareness, build a sense of
community commitment
and extend meaningful
educational opportunities
that increase knowledge
and enhance academic
skills.
Why do we do it?
‘s Mission:
Utah Valley University is a teaching institution which provides opportunity, promotes
student success, and meets regional educational needs. UVU builds on a foundation of
substantive scholarly and creative work to foster engaged learning. The university
prepares professionally competent people of integrity who, as life-long learners and
leaders, serve as stewards of a globally interdependent community.
Core Themes 2010:
Student
Success
Serious
UVU fosters a culture of academic rigor
and professional excellence.
Engaged
Inclusive
UVU engages its community in
mutually beneficial collaboration and
emphasizes engaged learning.
UVU provides opportunity for Individuals
from a wide variety of backgrounds and
perspectives and meets regional
educational needs.
How do we do it?
• Academic Service-Learning
o Service-learning is an academic teaching pedagogy that combines
academic objectives with a service experience. UVU offers over 50 servicelearning classes each semester.
• Student Leadership
o Service Scholar Program – This is a program that recognizes students for their
service. Students who successfully complete the program receive a distinction
on their transcript and honor cords at graduation.
o Service Council – The Service Council is a group of student leaders dedicated
to planning and implementing student-run programs for the benefit of UVU
and the community. During the 2010-2011 academic year, students facilitated
180 events.
o AmeriCorps Scholarship – AmeriCorps is national service program that provides
an Education Award to students who serve in their community.
• Community Outreach
o Community Partnership – Our office provides training to approved community
partners and provide resources such as: Service Fairs, access to students,
trainings, etc.
Purpose of Community Partnerships
