The timings of the School day

Registration is in the morning at 8.25am which is preceded by a warning bell at 8.23am. We expect all students to arrive at school by 8.25am and to be at their tutor bases by 8.30am. Students must additionally ensure that they are punctual to all lessons as poor punctuality to lessons can result in a truancy mark. The timings of the day are in students planners and on page 1 of this booklet.

Attendance and punctuality

We expect your son/daughter to be in school every day and on time unless:

He/she is too ill to attend

He/she has a medical appointment that can only be made in the school hours

Other extreme circumstances where permission has been agreed by the Headteacher

Leave of absence in term time

We do not authorise holidays during term time. If you require your son/daughter to be absent from school for exceptional circumstances, you will need to request a leave of absence application from

Reception. The Headteacher will consider these requests on an individual basis, taking into account the student’s attendance record and the circumstances surrounding the request. Please do not book any flights or accommodation before the absence has been agreed.

What will we do to monitor attendance and punctuality?

We will contact you on the first day of absence, at home or work, if you have not previously informed us on the reason why your son/daughter is absent

Send you an absent letter if we have not been able to contact you after 3days

Send you regular attendance and punctuality statistics

Contact you and arrange a meeting to discuss any concerns we have over attendance and persistent issues with punctuality

Guidance for parents/carers

Please reinforce our expectations regarding full attendance and excellent punctuality with your son/daughter

Support Prendergast Vale School staff when we take action over punctuality and truancy

Let us know of any change in contact details immediately

Contact Prendergast Vale School to inform us about any absence, on the morning of the same day.

Ensure that your child completes any work that has been sent home or that he/she catches up with any work that has been missed

Excellent attendance is important because:

We want all students to take advantage of the opportunities provided. Evidence shows that there is a direct link between poor attendance and under-achievement. Students not in school are more at risk of failing to achieve. In addition, they run a greater risk of getting involved with crime or becoming victims of crime.

The law requires parent/carers to be responsible for ensuring that their children attend school and are on time. This guide will explain clearly what our expectations are regarding attendance and punctuality and how we will deal with any problems or issues in this area.

At the end of the school year, students with 100% attendance without any late marks will be rewarded.

Contacting Prendergast Vale School

Please contact us as soon as possible to inform us of any absence (preferably the same day before

8.25am). Please report any absence, inform us of any future absence or advise us of changes in contact details. Please contact Prendergast Vale School and ask to speak to Karolyne Anderson on

020 8297 3540 (extension absence line) who will take necessary details. Any other issues or concerns should be made to your child’s house tutor who will deal with these in the first instance.

You can find contact details for all of our teachers on our website.

Medical appointments/emergencies

Please avoid making appointments for students during the school day. If this is absolutely necessary, students must come with a copy of the appointment letter/card and a signed note explaining what time they will need to leave (and if necessary, return). Students will need to sign in/out at reception in the student signing in book when arriving and leaving. If you need to contact your child in an emergency, please do so by calling the school’s main number (0208 297 3540) and a member of staff will get a message to their class teacher. This should be in the case of an emergency only.

Communications with Parents

Parentmail2 is an online application which allows parents to receive communications from school by email and/or text and also make secure online payments for trips and topping up dinner money accounts. Our primary means of sending you information about school will be email, via the

Parentmail2 system. This will also be the only way to pay for any school trips as we cannot, under

any circumstances take cash payments via the school office. Registration code letters will be given out to all parents, we advise all parents to register with Parentmail2 as soon as possible, so you are ready to receive any communications if necessary prior to starting school in the new term.

Cashless Catering

We use a biometric system to manage dinner money and access to dinner accounts. Payment machines, which use fingerprint recognition technology, are located around the school site giving easy access to both parents and students.

The system will not allow for any account to fall into arrears and if a pupil has a zero balance on their account they will be required to bring in a packed lunch until the account returns to a positive balance. No school meals will be provided for children if their parent has failed to provide them with either a packed lunch or the means to pay for a school meal. The system does not allow for any credit.

Children who are entitled to a free school meal receive additional funding, called the Pupil Premium which must be spent specifically on enriching your child’s learning and ensuring that they perform as well in school as those students who are not entitled to the Pupil Premium. It is therefore very important for your child’s learning that if they are entitled to receive free school meals, they are registered with the local authority.

If you think your child may be entitled to free school meals, advice can be sought from the Pupil

Support Team at Laurence House in Catford. They can be contacted by visiting in person or by telephone on 020 8314 6221. Lines are open from 1.00 pm to 4.00 pm Monday to Friday. It is also possible to apply online by visiting www.lewisham.gov.uk/freeschoolmeals

Homework

Students will be set homework according to a timetable, which they will be given according to their personal timetable. In Years 7 students will receive approximately 3-4 hours of homework per week, from across the different subject areas. Some homework will be in the form of extended tasks, while other pieces will be due in the following lesson. Prep sessions will be part of the enrichment timetable, part of which may be used to complete homework.

All students must have their planner with them each day, and keep them out on desks at all times during lessons as they are an important learning tool. If a student does not have their planner, they will be issued with a day sheet and will be required to attend a Returns meeting at the end of the day. All homework must be written down in the planner, along with the date that it is due in. If a day sheet has been issued, then homework must be copied into the planner ready for the next day.

Bikes, Blades and Scooters

All students are to dismount at the gate. We do not allow the riding of bikes and scooters on school premises. Students are to place their items in the bike shed where they will be stored until the end of the day.

Roller blades are not permitted as a mode of transport to school, and not allowed on school premises. This is for the safety of all students and staff on site.

Rewards

The school actively seeks to reward students as much as possible in all situations; this is done by staff awarding students positive logs on the school’s behaviour system. These logs are then monitored on a weekly basis during each term. Students will be notified of their positive recognition during Friday’s whole school Achievement Assembly. They will also receive positive recognition letters that are sent home.

The stages of the positive recognition are:

Achievement Reward given

Positive Postcard Student has 4 or more positive logs for two weeks in a row

Student has 4 or more positive logs for three weeks in a row

Student has 4 or more positive logs for four

Head of House Letter

Head of Key Stage Letter weeks in a row

Student has 4 or more positive logs for five weeks in a row

Head Teacher Letter

Achievement Assembly also recognises subject positive behaviour. Each week subject teachers will nominate a student. This may be for various reasons: marked progress in a subject, acting as a good role model for other students, going the extra mile to help staff or other students.

Behaviour

The purpose of our behaviour systems and policy is to ensure that all our students are ready for learning and can maximise the opportunities they have to make outstanding progress. We wish to encourage our students to be reflective if their actions have not been appropriate and so our sanctions are based on resolution rather than punishment.

Please note this is a brief summary of our behaviour policy, the full behaviour policy is constantly reviewed and updated and is available to view at the school.

Friends of Prendergast Vale (FoPV)

Information for new parents

Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to Prendergast Vale!

As your child is now a pupil here you are automatically members of the parents’ association, known as Friends of Prendergast Vale – or FoPV for short.

We are a relatively new organisation, but hope to become bigger and more active within the school community as the school itself expands. We currently meet every 5 or 6 weeks at the school, usually on a Wednesday evening from 6.30pm.

At the moment we have a Chair, a Secretary and an Online Administrator, but there is no pressure on anyone to take up set roles – we are just happy to welcome everyone to our meetings who has an interest in supporting the work of the Head Teacher and staff at Prendergast Vale. We work closely with the School, and in particular the teacher responsible for Community Engagement, and Mr O’Neill the Head, who both attend our meetings to offer their advice and insight.

So far this year we have raised money by selling cakes and drinks at Parents’ Evenings but we have ambitious plans for the academic year 2014-15, and with your help I hope that we will be able to plan and organise more events for the whole school to enjoy.

We look forward to seeing you at our first meeting of the Autumn term which will be held in

September. However, if you would like any further information about the FoPV in the meantime, then please look out for our stall at the Festival of Creativity which is on Tuesday July 15 th in the school playground, or ask to join our Facebook Group – ‘Friends of Prendergast Vale’.

Best wishes,

Sharon Farnley

Secretary to the FoPV

Dear Parents

I am writing to inform you about Place2Be in Prendergast Vale School.

About Place2Be

Founded in 1994 Place2Be is an innovative, growing charity that supports children’s emotional development by offering them a space where they can express their feelings through talking, creative work and play. Place2Be delivers a range of services directly to children, parents and staff in schools and has been working in partnership with Prendergast Vale School since January 2013.

Place2Talk

One aspect of the service is Place2Talk - a lunchtime drop-in service which is open to all children in school. Here, children can make an appointment to spend 15 minutes with a trained counsellor to talk about friendships, concerns or any worries they may have. This is a very popular service and children can attend by themselves or with friends.

Parental consent

Unless we hear otherwise from you, the school and Place2Be assumes that all children have their parent/carers’ permission to come to Place2Talk at lunchtime. If you do not want your child to participate in Place2Talk, or would like to find out more about the service, please contact Amy Cox

Wootton (Place2Be School Project Manager) on 020 8 297 3540 or spm.prendergastvale@place2be.org.uk

to discuss the matter further. Alternatively, you may complete and return the slip below by 5 September 2014.

Yours sincerely

Paul O’Neill
