University Academy of Engineering South Bank Trafalgar Street, London SE17 2TP E: admissions@uaesouthbank.org.uk W: www.uaesouthbank.org.uk T: 020 7277 3000 18th December 2015 Dear families, The Year 8 production of 1001 Arabian nights last night was an outstanding success. Our first ever production has really set the bar high and marks the success of the first two modules of Drama, Music and Art at the Academy. Mrs Brooksbank has in her first term of teaching marked herself out as a very special drama teacher. Michael Faraday students and our own Year 7 students were fabulous audiences for our 3 dress rehearsals. All of our staff were in attendance for the evening performance. Our thanks go out to all of our students, staff and community partners. In particular; Jane Ball from The National Theatre, The Aylesbury Every Women’s centre for the beautiful scarves, waistcoats and trousers, Glasswells Furniture for the cardboard, Lorna Little for the wonderful Genie hat, Amaya Owen Rowlands for her support with directing, all the staff at University Academy of Engineering for their help and support, Ms Mitchell and the Art enrichment for the gorgeous props and costumes, Ms Ho for her Musical direction, Lily Kirwan for the stage management and Martin Esze and Abdalla Saleh Mohamed for the lighting. New Newsletters style Today’s newsletter is a celebration of our students’ journalist skills. In community time this module they have prepared for you, paragraphs about the academy. We hope that you enjoy this new editional style. Year 7 University Challenge During the whole of Module 2 we have been learning about things to do with the F1 cars, in all of our different learning areas. In music we have been learning how to play the Formula 1 theme tune on the keyboard which is a really good tune to learn. Also, in Science we are learning about the fuels inside a Formula 1 car and we are designing the car of the future. Talking about designing the car of the future, in Design and Engineering we are making our own car using Styrofoam. Not only are we designing our own car, we are using different tools such as a drill which lets you drill holes where the wheels go. Hayley Furminger Attending a lecture at South Bank University A few weeks ago we went to South Bank University to see Dr Black talk about her life and how she became an Engineer. It was very inspiring because her life is regular like everyone else’s. She inspired me to become an Engineer because she met with WILL.I.AM. Khaleel Brewesh Mora University Academy of Engineering South Bank Trafalgar Street, London SE17 2TP E: admissions@uaesouthbank.org.uk W: www.uaesouthbank.org.uk T: 020 7277 3000 Origami Enrichment In Origami we have been making things like Sharikea, cranes and planes. We have also been testing our planes and have tried to make 1,000 cranes. I like origami because I like making things. Tyrell Brown Mandarin Enrichment In Mandarin we are learning how to say colours, foods and drinks. We also take notes to revise at home. My favourite colour in Mandarin is Lanse. I like the Mandarin teacher because she is very calm and kind. Josh Miles Coders club This module we have been learning many things but I want to write about my enrichment coders club. I like coders club because it’s something I can relate to and it’s something I like. I wish to make a game and website which will be popular and I’ll be a success. It’s better than something too competitive like football. Charlie Designing the new Academy summer dress A team of 8 girls have been designing a school summer dress with White Hall Clothiers. We have been working to create the shape and designs of the fabric of the dress. We will be sharing the initial designs with everyone in January. Grace Ntambwe Year 8 Design and Engineering In Design and Engineering we have been making motor powered cars. To do this we had to design what the car would look like and where the motor would go. I also had to evaluate and make it, which was quite easy. Mary Hodges Year 7 Boys football In the Academy Year 7 football is very fun and hard working. We played many games and they were really challenging. We have to work together and have confidence in each other and not put each other down. I enjoy it because it is very exciting and fun. Yasir Mohamed-Mabsout University Academy of Engineering South Bank Trafalgar Street, London SE17 2TP E: admissions@uaesouthbank.org.uk W: www.uaesouthbank.org.uk T: 020 7277 3000 Year 8 Fantastic Moments I had a fantastic first 2 modules this year, we have been working on theatre and design etc. In Drama we have been creating a play called ‘Sinbad the sailor’. I’m very excited for all the parents and carers to come and watch out great performance. In Science we are working on light and sound in the theatre. We found out that if you are too close to a speaker, it will damage your ears. We also learnt hat in a theatre it’s best to have a brick wall so that the sound doesn’t travel through. In English we have been reading the story 1001 Arabian Nights to get a better understanding of the story. We have been showing Mr McCollum our play and he thinks it’s really great! Dylan Rendon Jimenez We do hope that you have enjoyed reading the students reviews of the module. We wish you all a very happy break and look forward to welcoming back the students at 8.15 on Tuesday 5th January 2016. Yours sincerely, Jane Rowlands Principal
