2014-2015 Student Policies and Procedures General Information CLASS PLACEMENT: All class placement decisions are made by CAPA’s Director based on age, ability and previous classroom performance. (see eligibility table on page) Placements are reviewed for accuracy, and adjustments will be made after classes begin if necessary. MAKE-UP CLASSES: Missed classes may be made up within 30 days of the initial absence. All makeup classes must be pre-arranged through the front desk in advance in order to avoid class overcrowding. Make-up classes may be used only for the type and level of class a student is enrolled in. PERFECT ATTENDANCE: Perfect attendance awards will be given at the year-end recital. If a student becomes ill and is unable to attend, they can still be eligible for perfect attendance if a) a doctor’s note is presented and b) the class is made up within 14 days. Students will not be eligible for perfect attendance if they have absences for any other reason – no exceptions. DANCE CLASS ATTENDANCE AND TARDINESS: Students are expected to arrive at least ten minutes prior to class time in order to be dressed and prepared for class. Students arriving five minutes or more after their class has begun may not be permitted to participate in the class due to risk of injury, but they may observe. Students must regularly attend class in order to progress. Any student who misses more than five classes after January 1, 2015 will be unable to participate in the year-end recital. CLASS OBSERVATION: CAPA encourages parents to observe their child's progress in their dance class(es). While parents can view every class on a television monitor in the lobby, the first week of the month (October-May) is "Watch Week." Blinds are opened so that parents can look directly into their child's classroom. CARE OF STUDENTS: The school is not responsible for providing before or after class care for students. Please drop off and pick up children in a timely manner. If an emergency arises and you are unable to do so, please inform the front desk. UNEXPECTED INTERUPTION OF CLASSES: If classes must be cancelled due to extreme weather or events beyond our control, any missed classes can be made up. No refunds will be given. LOST AND FOUND: CAPA is not responsible for any items left behind, lost or stolen on CAPA property. All dancers are encouraged to keep dance bags in view at all times, and to refrain from bringing valuables to the school. Items found will be placed in the lost and found. The lost and found will be disposed of at the end of each month. CLASSROOM AND FACILITY ETIQUETTE: CAPA expects students to treat each other, their teachers and the staff with respect. This includes treating fellow students and their belongings with courtesy and kindness, maintaining a polite, attentive and hardworking attitude with teachers, and avoiding gossip and/or negativity. EVALUATION: Students are evaluated three times throughout the year--in September, for correct level placement, in January, for proper progress, and in late April, for placement in the following school year. If at any time, you wish to check on your child's progress, please schedule an appointment with the school's director through the reception desk or via email to Lauren@camarilloacademy.com. ANNUAL RECITAL PERFORMANCES: All CAPA recitals are held at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza in July 2015. All CAPA students are expected to perform in their assigned show. Recital fees and pre-paid costume fees are due in the beginning of 2015. COMMUNICATION: CAPA is dedicated to open communication with parents and students alike. Parents and students should feel free to talk to teachers and staff members about any questions or concerns; however, please schedule an appointment to do so rather than speaking before or after class in order to keep classes running on time. RESPECT FOR FACILITY/SAFETY REMINDERS: Respect must also be shown to all CAPA property. Food and drinks are allowed in the lobby and common areas, however only water is allowed in the dance/music rooms. Absolutely no gum chewing inside the classrooms. Please be courteous and pick up trash after you have finished eating. All hallways and doorways must remain unobstructed at all times in order to adhere to the fire code. Students should bring their belongings/dance bags with them into the classroom. Children who are visiting CAPA, both students and siblings or friends of students, must be properly supervised while on CAPA property. Any previously ordered costumes can be picked up between July 1 and September 1 of the same calendar year. As of September 1, all unclaimed costumes will be disposed of. Dress Code OVERVIEW One of the main goals at CAPA is to develop a sense of discipline and pride in our students. For this reason, all students are expected to maintain a neat appearance and to abide by the specified dress code for their level and/or class. Each dress code is designed to suit the style of dance or discipline being learned. All Pre-Academy, Academy and Intensive Academy ballet students must wear the appropriate color of leotard according to the CAPA dress code for each of their ballet classes. This not only creates a disciplined learning environment free from distractions but also provides students with a strong sense of pride and accomplishment as they progress through each level of classical ballet. Students have tangible evidence of their achievement. PROPER CARE OF DANCE SHOES Please note that all dance shoes, whether ballet slippers, jazz shoes or hip-hop sneakers, should never be worn outside the building as dirt can become embedded in the soles and damage the dance floors. All ballet slippers should fit snugly with the drawstrings tied in a knot and the excess cut off and tucked in. Elastics must be properly sewn in. Elastics that have been tied under the foot are unacceptable. This can cut off the circulation of blood as well as cause the line of the foot to become distorted. A ballet slipper that fits correctly is essential to the proper development of the foot. Therefore, buying ballet slippers, or any dance shoes that are too big to allow for growth, is not beneficial. If you are unsure about the fit, your child’s teacher will be glad to guide you in the process. HAIR For all dance classes, hair must be pulled back off the face and securely fastened as specified for each class. It is advisable to keep a supple of extra hair pins, bun accessories and hair spray in student’s dance bag at all times. INJURY PREVENTION There are several steps dancers can take to help prevent injuries: 1. Arrive in time to warm up with light stretching exercises. If recovering from an injury, the injured area should be specifically warmed up. 2. Pay attention to nutrition. Students of the Intensive Academy and /or Young Dance Artists Performing Arts Company are especially in need of eating well. It is important to keep muscles and bones strong in order to deal effectively with rigorous class and rehearsal schedules. 3. See your doctor if you believe you may be injured. Don’t take chances. If you have a pain at one site which continues or increases as you are participating in classes, please see your doctor and inform your teacher. Early detection is the key to preventing serious injury. 4. Ice and Massage. If you suspect an injury, the best home treatment is to massage the affected area with ice. Eight minutes of ice massage followed by a five minute break, then eight more minutes of ice massage, 3-4 times per day is usually adequate. Always use a thin cloth or towel between the ice and your skin, or be sure to keep the ice moving. 5. Students unable to participate in class due to sickness or injury must provide their teacher with a written note from their parents and/or doctor in order to be given permission to sit out of class. Students should come prepared with a notebook to take proper notes. CAMARILLO ACADEMY OF PERFORMING ARTS 2520-A Las Posas Rd. Camarillo, Ca 93010 805-383-6446www.camarilloacademy.com
