Spring 2014
Dear High School Counselor,
Florida Gulf Coast University offers an exceptional opportunity to qualified high school juniors and seniors
through the Accelerated Collegiate Experience (ACE). Students in the ACE program seek a higher-level
educational experience, access to highly qualified professors, state-of-the-art laboratories, university–level
support resources and outstanding, rigorous curriculum. With an office that exclusively serves high school
students, FGCU offers ACE students guidance from a professional staff that is dedicated to student success.
The program offers: 1) access to faculty who mentor and teach classes cohorted for ACE students; 2)
dedicated academic advising; 3) high-impact service opportunities; and 4) special programming that
enhances leadership skills and appreciation of learning. Whether taking classes part-time or full-time, ACE
students become reflective learners and leaders, equipped for new and future challenges. They become
engaged intellectually and socially, ready to make a difference in their world.
This manual is intended to provide information to assist you with your current and future FGCU dual
enrollment and early admission students. Please let us know how we can improve it. Thank you for
recommending FGCU’s ACE program to your qualified students…and as always,
Thank you for what you do for ALL students in our community!
Alice Mcleod Brunner, Interim Director
Accelerated Collegiate Experience
DUAL ENROLLMENT
Students in the ACE program may take classes either on a part-time or full-time basis. If seeking
part-time enrollment, the student must be admitted as a “dual enrollment” student. The
student is restricted to taking 11 credit hours or less and is registered in other courses at the
high school or through FLVS. No more than 6 credits will be permitted in the summer term.
EARLY ADMISSION
Students who seek full-time status must apply as “early admission”. Full-time status requires a
minimum course load of 12 credit hours and the student takes all coursework at FGCU. No
more than 16 credits will be permitted in the fall and spring terms and no more than 6 credits is
permitted in summer terms.
ADMISSION CRITERIA
Both dual enrollment and early admission students who have expressed an interest in enrolling
in the ACE program must meet the following criteria:
 Have completed a minimum of 4 semesters in high school
 Have a 3.3 grade point average (weighted)
 Not have completed sufficient units to qualify for high school graduation and must apply
all credits earned to meeting high school graduation requirements and University
criteria. (Students may need to take additional courses in order to qualify for the Bright
Futures Scholarship Program)
 Have the approval of parents and the high school
 Test scores on the ACE of 23 composite or higher (including combined English and
writing of 18 or higher) or 1600 or higher on the SAT (total of critical reading, math and
writing).
 A minimum SAT critical reading score of 440, writing score of 440 and math score of 440
or minimum ACT scores of 17 for English, 19 for math and 18 for reading.
 Have the approval of the FGCU Director of Undergraduate Admissions

THE ADMISSION AND ENROLLMENT PROCESS
All students who are interested in applying for the ACE program are asked to make an
appointment to meet with their high school counselor. During this session the High School
Graduation Checklist is completed with the counselor and the ACE Program Authorization
Form is signed which signifies the counselor’s recommendation for the student to apply as a
dual enrolled or early admitted student. The student then sends required immunization
records to the FGCU Student Health Services.

MATH PLACEMENT
Placement into math courses at FGCU is determined by the FGCU Math Placement Matrix.
Students will be initially placed into math based upon SAT/ACE math scores on record. A math
subscore of 550 or above on the SAT or math subscore of 24 on the ACT will place students in
College Algebra, Finite Math or Statistical Methods. Higher level course placement may need
further testing through the Math Placement Test which is given through FGCU’s Testing and
Assessment Center. The student may take an Elementary Algebra (EA) or College Level Math
(CLM) assessment at the recommendation of the ACE academic advisor. The ACE academic
advisor will assist the student in determining whether a math placement test should be taken
and in scheduling the student for the test. There is a fee of 25.00 due at the time of testing.

GENERAL EDUCATION
The General Education Program at FGCU is designed to offer a wide array of courses across five
discipline areas that support the university mission and guiding principles. The program is
developed and approved by program faculty. Students seeking a bachelor’s degree at FGCU
must complete the General Education Program as part of their degree requirements. Many of
the courses are used to satisfy high school graduation requirements. Students may satisfy
general education courses with approved IB, AICE, CLEP or AP scores.

COMMUNICATION AND COMPUTATION SKILLS REQUIREMENTS
Students who wish to complete the Associate of Arts degree or Baccalaureate degree must
satisfy the Communication and Computation Skills requirement. Demonstrated mastery in
college-level writing is assessed in four writing intensive courses (12 credits). Courses that are
writing intensive are noted with a “(W)” on the General Education Program sheet. In order to
earn writing credit, the student must earn a grade of “C” or better in all four writing intensive
courses. Students must earn a grade of “C” or better in two math-intensive courses (6 credits)
to fulfill the computation skills requirement.
FLORIDA VIRTUAL SCHOOL
Early admission students may elect to take Florida Virtual School classes if approved by the high
school counselor. FLVS courses do not count toward the full-time course load at FGCU and
would be in addition to the FGCU classes. Counselors are asked to note what FLVS classes the
student is/will be taking on the High School Graduation Checklist so that all parties can consider
the total course load.
SERVICE LEARNING
Service learning is encouraged for ACE students and many students take courses that require
service as part of the class requirement. There are opportunities for students to complete
service activities with their ACE peers, as well as on an individual basis. All service approved
and submitted through the FGCU Office of Service Learning and Civic Engagement will appear
on the student’s FGCU transcript. FGCU service hours are acceptable for Bright Futures service
requirements.
ACE HONORS PROGRAM
Full-time juniors who are interested in pursuing advanced scholastic work and research may
meet criteria to take FGCU Honors Program classes in their senior year. Honors classes are
taught by Honors Fellows and are restricted to Honors students. Courses are designed to
stimulate critical thinking and analysis and allow for research, service, and cultural immersion
experiences. Students seeking ACE Honors should notify the ACE director.
CLASS/PROGRAM WITHDRAWAL
High school counselors will always be notified if an ACE student wishes to withdraw from a class
and will not be withdrawn without approval from the counselor. High school counselors will
determine whether the student will need reassignment to a high school class. Withdrawal from
classes must occur within the official FGCU registration timelines (see calendar section).
Withdrawal from a class after the first week of classes and before the deadline to withdraw
12| P a g e
from courses will result in a “W” grade on the transcript which does not affect the FGCU GPA
(see calendar section for deadlines).
REPEAT OF COURSES
Students may not repeat the same course for grade forgiveness or any other purpose while an
ACE student. Students may repeat a course for grade forgiveness if the course is taken at FGCU
after high school graduation.
TRANSITION TO FGCU FOLLOWING HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION
It is always great to hear that students want to stay at FGCU after completing high school
graduation requirements! Full-time early admission students need only notify the ACE director
regarding their desire to stay. No application is required, but a final high school transcript
showing graduation must be sent to the Undergraduate Admission Office by September 15th of
the first semester. Part-time dual enrollment students are required to complete a general firsttime-in-college application which may be found on the FGCU Undergraduate Admission
website. Students who stay at FGCU will be transitioned from the ACE program to FGCU
College Advising.

FERPA
Once students matriculate at the university, academic records are protected from third party
access unless a release is signed by the student. ACE students are required to sign the Third
Party Authorization Form as part of the admission package. Authorization by the student will
allow academic information to be sent to parents and the high school.
14 | P a g e
MUSIC MAJORS
Students seeking music as a major may need to audition for certain classes. All full-time ACE
music majors must take at minimum of 12 credits of core academic classes to meet full-time
status. Additional music “skill” classes may be taken within the 16 credit hour/semester limit,
but these courses may not appear on the high school transcript. While most students at FGCU
are completing General Education requirements during the first two years of the baccalaureate,
the sequence of required courses for music majors stretches out General Education into the
senior year of college. Students are cautioned to think carefully about entering FGCU as an
Early Admission student if they plan to follow the music major track.
