MGT 470 is a prerequisite for this course. Required Text Heneman, H.G., III, Judge, T.A., and Kammeyer-Mueller, J. (2014). Staffing Organizations (8th edition). Middleton, WI: Mendota House, Inc. And yes, you will definitely need the book for this class. Class Format Class meetings will consist primarily of question-and-answer sessions and discussions. Lecture will comprise a relatively small part of class time. Thus, you will be expected to be prepared for class discussions each day by having read and answered the questions on the assigned material. Course Communication It is important that you check your e-mail frequently for class information. Students are responsible for information sent to them via e-mail. If you do not regularly check your university email address, change your Moodle e-mail address to the one you check. Please let me know ASAP if you have any trouble with receiving messages through Moodle. Course Activities and Final Grade Determination Grades are based on your individual performance. They are not based on attendance, effort, personality, potential, or need. No student’s final grade will be increased for any reason other than calculation error. In other words, if you are 1 point away from earning an A, you will earn a B; you will not be “bumped up.” Remember, too, that C is an average grade. Additionally, if you are a Management major, to receive credit for this course, you must score a “C” or better or will have to repeat the course. Final grades for the course will be determined using the following activities and scale: Course Activities Activity Grade Determination Scale Points for each 5 45 *4 quizzes *4 exams *Tanglewood Case Project *Individual Presentations *Participation Total course points Total Points 20 180 80 90% = A 80% = B 70% = C 60% = D 20 Below 60% = F 40 340 Class Participation I will evaluate class participation each time the class meets (excluding exam days). To earn required participation (25 points), you must have prepared answers to the questions on the slides posted on the Moodle website and provide the correct answer when called upon in class from a randomly ordered list. If you answer incorrectly, but appear to have been prepared, you may have another chance to answer that day for credit. If you are absent or unprepared to answer, you will not receive credit for required participation that day. Voluntary participation is expected from everyone in class. Any inappropriate or unprofessional conduct will cause you to lose participation points. If you are not in class, you will receive 0 participation points for the day, but you do not earn points simply by attending without contributing. Participation grades will be based on the following formula, and no student can earn more than 40 points for participation. Exams Each exam will consist of multiple choice and short answer questions and will cover material from the text, question and answer sessions, and lectures. Exams will be taken at the start of the class on the scheduled dates unless prior arrangements are made. They may be rescheduled due to illness, death in the family, or other similar extenuating circumstances, but they may not be rescheduled for reasons such as vacations, work, or oversleeping. There will be one cumulative make-up exam offered at the end of the quarter. This exam will substitute for any missed exam or can be used to substitute for a low grade a student wishes to have dropped. Quizzes There will be four quizzes, which will be administered at the beginning of class. The quizzes will cover material that you have prepared for class. If you miss a quiz for a legitimately excused reason (university-approved absence or documented illness), you will be allowed to make it up within a week of the quiz date. Unexcused absences or tardiness will result in a zero for the quiz. Projects & Presentations Topics will be assigned for individual presentations during the quarter. Each student will investigate one topic and present their findings to the class (5-10 minutes). Information about the Tanglewood Case project will be distributed separately. Course Policies and Procedures 1. You are expected to attend every time the class is scheduled to meet. Please try to be on time. Your attendance will be recorded and you will be counted absent if you are more than 10 minutes late. Unless you have received prior permission, you will be counted absent if you leave class early. 2. Qualified students needing testing accommodations or classroom accommodations based upon a disability are encouraged to discuss the need with the instructor during the first week of class during office hours or by appointment. Note: prior to receiving disability accommodations, verification of eligibility from the Testing and Disability Services office is needed. Disability information is confidential. Information for Testing and Disability Services may be obtained in Wylie Tower room 318 or at www.latech.edu/ods. 3. Preparation for class includes reading the assigned chapter and preparing for the questions for each chapter prior to class and being prepared to participate in class discussion. 4. In accordance with the Academic Honor Code, students pledge the following: Being a student of higher standards, I pledge to embody the principles of academic integrity. Cheating and other misconduct will be punished to the fullest extent of university policies. Policy 2216 states that “academic misconduct at the university is determined by the faculty member under whom such misconduct occurs. The penalty for cheating and other forms of misconduct is also determined by the faculty member.” Refer to www.latech.edu/documents/honor-code.pdf for a complete version of Louisiana Tech University’s Academic Honor Code. 5. No use of cellphones or PDAs during class—that means no emailing, no texting, no music, no video, nothing involving use of the web (unless requested by the instructor). Silent mode may be used to receive communications as long as it does not present a disturbance to the class. 6. Disaster Preparedness: In case of an emergency, students should login to http://www.latech.edu within 12-24 hours of the emergency for campus updates. The emergency alternative site is http://www.latech.info. In case of a University declared disaster, class will be continued via Moodle. You will receive instructions via Moodle regarding the continuation of class. You must contact the instructor regarding materials and assignments within 36 hours of a University closure. 7.
