The 8th Chinese Bridge ---- Chinese Proficiency
Competition for Foreign College Students
Preliminary Contest in Northern California
To promote Chinese culture, stimulate oversea college students' enthusiasm and interest in
learning Chinese, and enhance the friendship between Chinese and foreign youth, the Office of
Chinese Language Council International (Hanban) has been hosting the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese
Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students every year since 2001. This year, the 8 th
Chinese Bridge ---- Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students will be held in
August 2009 in China.
For this purpose, the Confucius Institute at SF State will organize the preliminary contest in
Northern California for the 8th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign
College Students. The specific arrangements are as follows:
1. Theme: Fun with Chinese, Dreams of Success
2. Host for preliminary: the Confucius Institute at SF State, Education Office of the Chinese
Consulate General in San Francisco
3. Time: May 10, 2009 (Sunday), 1:00-6:30 pm
4. Place: Humanity Building of San Francisco State University
5. Contents:
a) Chinese language proficiency: select one topic from the topics provided by organizer, and
delivers a speech within 3 minutes;
b) Knowledge of China: Participants can refer to the related content (in form of questions and
answers) released on this webpage;
c) Chinese cultural skills: Chinese songs, music, dance, folk arts, acrobatics, musical instruments,
calligraphy, Chinese paintings, Chinese paper-cutting, Chinese martial arts etc.
* Applicants may skip part b, part c or both. However, only those who perform in three parts are
eligible for the top two prize winners.
6. Participants: American college students or postgraduates under 30 years of age with foreign
nationalities or overseas-born Chinese whose first language is not Chinese
7. Evaluation and awarding methods:
a) The host will invite Chinese educational experts as judges to select out 2 top prize winners
and several single prize winners on the competition site;
b) The host will recommend the 2 top prize winners to Hanban to compete in the semi-final and
final competition in China during July 9 to August 7. Hanban will cover their round-trip
international airfare, accommodations and transportation expenses in China for the
competition. After the competition, they will be sent back in groups by the committee;
c) All participants of the preliminary competition will be awarded a certificate and prizes. Please
