PUPIL MANAGEMENT

P1 Buddy Orientation Programme

In the first two weeks of school, each P1 pupil was paired with a P5/P6 pupil who acted as chaperones during recess. The P5/P6 pupils imparted and reinforced good values and practices to the P1 pupils such as queuing up in an orderly manner to buy food, putting their plates and bowls at the right places after their meal, washing their hands before and after their meal. P1 pupils were also brought around to see the available facilities around the school. Through this programme, the senior Kong Hwaians interacted with the P1 Kong Hwaians whilst assuming responsibilities as mentors.

Friends of Singa 2014

The yearly Friends of Singa programme returns with the aim of developing ambassadors who promote acts of kindness and encourage peers to be kind and considerate. Selected Primary 5 pupils were nominated by their form teachers to become Friends of Singa, who are the kindness ambassadors for the school.

Zippy’s Friends

Zippy’s Friends focusses on teaching young children social and positive coping skills to help them to overcome difficult times, for example dealing with change and transition. This 6-module evidence-based programme from UK will teach young children how to cope with everyday difficulties, identify and talk about their feelings and explore ways of dealing with them. It also encourages children to help one another to cope with problems that they encounter. The selected P2 pupils can foster greater self-competency by learning effective problem-solving skills and increase the level of self-awareness in knowing how different situations can affect oneself through this 12-weeks programme which started on 11 February 2014.

Safety Programme (Part I)

Safety is everyone’s responsibility. To raise awareness amongst Kong Hwaians that they are responsible for their own safety and the safety of others within the school, a video about what they should do and what they should not do within the school compounds was shown during assembly. Kong Hwaians were told to play ball games in the presence of a teacher(s), keep a lookout for traffic when they cross at the pedestrian crossing, watch where they are running to and not to run to and in the canteen. Kong Hwaians became aware of how they should conduct themselves for everyone’s safety in the school.

Green Movement (Term 1)

Nation-wide activities were held on 15 March 2014 to celebrate World Water Day. A few Primary 5 Kong

Hwaians participated in the National Water Quiz 2014 organised by Nan Hua High School and competed

(2014) against 42 other schools. During the event, they participated in various activities and gained valuable knowledge on the importance of water.

Cleanest Class and Best ‘Creative Values Board’ Award (Term 1)

Cleanest Class and Best ‘Creative Values Board’ Award gives recognition to Kong Hwaians who upkeep the cleanliness of their class and decorate the classroom noticeboard to display their values-based work. These activities build character and inculcate values in Kong Hwaians as they will be able to take pride in their classroom, clean up after themselves and take responsibility of their own messes. The cleanest class with the best ‘Creative Values Board’ for each level will be awarded termly.

Pupils’ Suggestion Scheme (Term 1)

Pupils’ Suggestion Scheme provided Kong Hwaians with a platform to make suggestions on improving the school’s environment. In term 1, all P3 to P6 pupils gave their suggestions on improvement to the school hygiene. Three best suggestions for each level were selected by our P6 prefects and student leaders.

Student Leaders Training

On 17 March 2014, the P5 Prefects and Senior Leaders and P4 Student Leaders had undergone a common training module on altruism. It highlights the need for effective and compassionate leaders to consciously give practical help by putting others before oneself. It strongly advocates to them that a successful compassionate leader, compassion should always be at one’s minds and hearts. Besides Altruism, the P5

Prefects were trained on Project Management, Peer Mentoring and Problem Solving. This training equipped them with knowledge, skills and values in planning, implementing and evaluating a school-based project. They will be mentored by their facilitators from Tanjong Katong Secondary School as they engage to plan activities for our Primary 4 student leaders during a day-camp in September.

The P4 Student Leaders had undergone two aspects of Basic Leadership Training: influence in leadership and developing effective teamwork skills. It also highlighted the qualities of a good leader and aimed to empower a good leader to be a role model and influence others in terms of character, behaviour and values instead of using authority to accomplish a goal. Newly appointed P3 Junior Leaders were trained in

Effective Communication Skills as it is a key skill of a good leader. The importance of having feedback or acknowledgement was emphasised for a complete communication process. It also encompasses the 3 main goals behind communication and what it means to be a good leader. Furthermore, factors affecting communication (Verbal, Intonation and Body Language) were explained and illustrated, highlighting how to communicate rather than what to communicate.

Pupil Leadership Development

Selection of Student Leaders

Selection of leaders begins in the classroom with class leadership roles e.g. Green Captains, PE Monitors, etc. Through teachers’ nomination, P3 Junior Leaders are selected. Together with the P4 Student Leaders, they monitor the pupils to ensure school rules and regulations are abided. They are deployed during recess at strategic locations to assist teachers in ensuring safety and security of the school. During recess, Student

Leaders ensure that pupils queue up to buy things and clear their crockery.

In term 4, potential P4 pupils are recommended for selection for Senior Leaders and Prefects. It is not guaranteed that serving Student Leaders will become Prefect or Senior Leaders. Serving Student Leaders and potential candidates who are nominated by teachers stand an equal chance to be appointed as

Prefects or Senior Leaders. The nominated Primary 4 pupils will undergo a day-camp in September and an interview by a panel of teachers. All potential Primary 4 pupils will be subjected to various levels of assessment in leadership using the Pupil Leadership Assessment Rubric. The stringent selection process ensures that our student leaders are role models for fellow Kong Hwaians.
