MATHEMATICS 10 COURSE OUTLINE FOR PARENTS AND STUDENTS Teacher Candace Power Phone (902) 366-2225 Email candace.power@srsb.ca Course Description and Overview: This program is recommended only for students who consistently demonstrated commendable performance in Grade 9 Mathematics. It is essential to have a strong work ethic, excellent time management skills, and a strong interest in Mathematics. This pathway is designed to provide students with the mathematical understandings and critical-thinking skills identified for post-secondary studies in programs that require an academic or pre-calculus mathematics credit. Topics include financial mathematics, geometry, measurement, number, logical reasoning, relations and functions, and statistics and probability Note: After completion of Mathematics 11, students have the choice of an academic or pre-calculus pathway. Math 10 has 8 Major Units: (Tentative Timeline) Unit 1: Measurement (September- October) Unit 2: Trigonometry (October – November) Unit 3: Factors and Products (November – December) Unit 4: Roots and Powers (December - January) Unit 5: Relations and Functions (February – March) Unit 6: Linear Functions (March – April) Unit 7: Systems of Linear Equations (April - May) Unit 8: Financial Mathematics (May – June) 4 Strands of Mathematics to be Studied: Measurement: Students will be expected to develop spatial sense and proportional reasoning. Algebra and Number: Students will be expected to develop algebraic reasoning and number sense. Relations and Functions: Students will be expected to develop algebraic and graphical reasoning through the study of relations. Financial Mathematics: Students will be expected to demonstrate number sense and critical thinking skills. Math 10 Evaluation Scheme 30% Tests 20% Assignments 15% Quizzes 5% Portfolio 30% Exams The tests will cover the material from the textbook, homework problems, and additional material covered in class. There will be a test for each unit. To ensure assessment for learning, there will be routine assignments composed of practice problems of new math concepts. Some of these will be individual and others will be in groups Quizzes assessing the material covered in class will be given on a regular basis. Throughout this course various problems will be assigned and you will be required to keep a collection of these problems with the answers in a neatly organized portfolio (binder). You will also keep your tests, assignments and quizzes neatly organized in this binder. From time to time you will also be required to write a journal or reflective piece to place in your portfolio. Journal writing is a means of clarifying your thinking, making connections among mathematical concepts, as well as with other disciplines, and developing your mathematical language. There will be two exams (January and June) to assess the material covered throughout the year. Please remember that in Math concepts build on one another and previous knowledge will often be used in the learning of new concepts. Your June exam will cover material from September to June. This exam is in the form of a provincial exam and is worth 20% of your final mark. *Please Note: All percentages are subject to change. These changes will be discussed in class. Student Expectations: Students are expected to be on time and prepared for class and to respect and be courteous to all students, teachers and staff, as well as to the school. Assigned work is expected to be completed and passed in on time. Students are expected to take responsibility for their own learning such as seeking extra help when needed, getting caught up if absent, and getting any missed notes/handouts. Students are asked to not have cell phones out in class. Please refer to student handbook for cell phone expectations for our school. Students will be expected to have organized notebooks, as it will be used as a study guide for tests, quizzes and examinations. Homework Homework will be given regularly and will be posted on Strait-up. When homework is assigned it is very important that it is completed. If no homework is assigned, students should take time to review material covered in class. Late Assignments: All assignments are due on the due date. If a student requires an extension please see me prior to the due date to discuss this. Each situation will be assessed individually. Materials: Students are required to have the following supplies for class. Pencil, eraser, ruler, protractor Binder with looseleaf and graph paper 1 inch binder for portfolio TI-83 Plus (provided) Textbook (provided) Grading: On all work (tests, assignments, quizzes, and exams) students are expected to show their work clearly, and completely. Students will be graded on the work they show as well as their answers…remember in math it is the processes used to get to an answer that matters most. You may not have the answer correct, but if you show your work I can evaluate you on your process used. Questions/ Extra Help: If you ever have a question about anything, please come see me. I arrive at 8:00am and I am also available during most breaks. However, if this does not resolve your concern, we can arrange an after-school meeting. NOTE: There is also homework help every Wednesday after school that I run. This would be an excellent time to come for extra help. Attendance Expectations: Students are expected to attend every class period. If a student knows in advance that he/she will not be able to attend, they are asked to check with me ahead of time to get the work he/she will miss. If a student is going to be late for a class or must leave early, if possible please let me know in advance. Success in this course is directly related to your presence in class, your effort and work ethic. If you miss a class it is your responsibility to find out what you missed, pick up any new handouts or returned assignments, tests, quizzes, etc. (For further information please refer to the school’s attendance policy). Missed Tests/Quizzes: Any student who misses a test, quiz, or presentation while absent, must make arrangements with me to make up their missed work. Parent/Teacher Communication: Report cards with comments regarding the progress of your son/daughter will be issued during the year. Please feel free to contact me at school by telephone or through e-mail (given at the beginning of this communication plan) should you have any questions or concerns related to your son’s/daughter’s progress. You can access your child’s grades and progress in this course on the parent portal. CONFIRMATION OF RECEIPT OF COMMUNICATION PLAN Math 10 C. Power In order to insure that both the students and the parents or guardians have received and read the communication plan, including the evaluation scheme and late assignment and missed work policies, I ask that you both sign this form and return it to me as soon as possible. I have also added a section for parent’s/guardian’s name, email and phone number so that I can be in contact with you regarding your son’s/daughter’s progress. This form will be saved for future reference.
