Term 2 Project: Cancer Poster Project
Cancer is a major cause of illness and death among Canadians, second only to
heart disease. You or someone you love will be affected by cancer at some point in your
lifetime. The purpose of this project is to examine a particular form of cancer; to
examine recent advances in cancer fighting technology; and to analyze the complex
decision-making process that goes into determining how money is spent on cancer
research.
A.
Poster Session:
One Type of Cancer (In groups of 2 or 3)
Pick one form of cancer and your group will produce a posterdisplay that outlines
all of the following information about that cancer:
CONTENT (42 marks)
1. Causes of your cancer and how it arises
2. Its effects on the body
3. Groups, geographic area, populations affected.
4. Long term prognosis for the disease (what is the cure rate? The death rate?)
5. Current treatments used for this disease
6. New treatments being developed
7. Why does this cancer deserve funding?
FORMAT (10 Marks)
Project is set up on a project display board. Each of the topics above is given a title
and at least 1 image. The background is clear and catchy, and the heading is clear
and informative.
WORKS CITED (8 marks)
Cite at least 4 bibliographic references, cited in the proper APA format.
The posters will all be displayed and presented on the same day at a class Poster Session.

Cancer is a major cause of illness and death among Canadians, second only to
heart disease. You or someone you love will be affected by cancer at some point in your
lifetime. The purpose of this project is show the cellular processes of cancer and how it
results from a lack of control of cell replication.

How Cancer Occurs
You will detailed explain the following information abouthow cancer occurs.
You may use any format (paper, powerpoint, other presentation, play, song, interpretive
dance, comic, sculpture…)

1. Differentiate between a proto-oncogene and an oncogene and the factors that
control their expression
2. Use examples to outline the roles of initiators and promoters in carcinogenesis
3. Demonstrate a knowledge of how a virus can bring about carcinogenesis
4. Describe cancer with respect to:

Abnormal nuclei

Disorganized and uncontrolled growth (anaplasia)

Lack of contact inhibition

Vascularization

Metastasis
5. List the seven danger signals that may indicate the presence of cancer
