Colonists began to protest and riot against the taxes because they affected
almost all colonists and led to the shutdown of newspapers as well as to
treasonous speeches being given speaking out against the tax.

To pay off the debt from the French and Indian War, and to pay for the standing
army left behind to protect the colonists and enforce the laws.
16. Were the Sons of Liberty terrorists or Patriots? Support your answer with evidence.
Patriot – Worked together to end unfair taxation in the colonies. These individuals
risked their lives and reputations to fight against tyranny. They fueled the war that
would ultimately lead to freedom today and had a passion for something positive for
Americans.
Terrorist - There were numerous examples of force Sons of Liberty members
allegedly used to enforce resistance against British tax laws. Merchants or
customers who did not honor boycotts of British goods were subject to destruction of
their property, threats, beatings, or being tarred and feathered. Some had their
homes or businesses burned
