Office Hours: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 9:00-10:00; or by appointment
Location: Sillers Art Building; Low Brass Room
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to familiarize students with representative masterworks of
music through the development of skills in listening, analyzing, and describing such
music. Prior knowledge and/ or experience with music is NOT expected. The course
will cover basic concepts of music and an overview of major historical style periods of
western music.
COURSE GOALS & STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
The purpose of this class is to enable each student to pursue a lifetime of perceptive
music listening. The following competencies will be established:
1. Define, identify, and recognize the uses of basic musical elements, including
pitch, duration, timbre, notation, and sound sources.
2. Analyze and identify examples that are representative of common musical forms,
such as binary, ternary, sonata form, and rondo form.
3. Gain a comparative understanding of the styles, trends, and achievements of
each of the major periods in music history. Be able to identify the most important
composers and schools of each period and explain their significance. Acquire
familiarity with multi-cultural musical traditions, including global (i.e. Asia and
Sub-Saharan Africa) music, jazz, rock, musical theatre, and folk music.
The work of this class will include guided listening, reading, writing, and discussions.
Students will be urged to attend live musical performances and to utilize the listening
resources of the Media Center and the J. H. White Library. The class will incorporate
such technological aids as specially tracked audio CDs and online resources to
enhance the goal of perceptive listening.

Pop Quizzes (Listening in class):
There will be 7 listening Quizzes given in class. There will be no make-up
listening exams unless the absence was pre-approved, or a doctor’s note is
provided. The listening exams will require students to identify a major piece of music
and information about the piece.
Midterm and Final Exam:
The two exams will not be cumulative. The format of each exam will be discussed
before it is administered. There will be no make-up exams. Students not able
to take a scheduled exam for a legitimate reason must notify the instructor in
advance so that a separate exam can be arranged. If you miss a test, you will be
required to do a library research project (10-15 pages typewritten) in its place. All
materials including lectures, readings, class exercises, discussions, and group
presentations are fair game for exams.
The Midterm and Final Exam will consist of: Questions from the online quizzes,
listening identification, and vocabulary matching. Additional questions may appear
on the exam. Additional formats will be discussed in exam review sessions.
Each student is allowed to have 1 letter page size sheet of notes for the midterm and
final exam. They may write any notes needed on this piece of paper.
