SUCCESS CAMP 2015 ACTIVITY: SPELLING DRILL A. DESCRIPTION: An exciting quiz competition testing the student’s spelling skill and ability. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. B. OBJECTIVES: To stimulate students’ interest and help them develop their knowledge of English vocabulary To test students’ skill and ability at spellings words and in turn help improve their spelling skill To help students become exposed to a variety of words, their origins and so increase their vocabulary To help students improve their command of English words in particular and expressions in general. To help build and enhance students’ confidence at participating at similar competitions C. PERSONNELS a. Moderator/ Quiz Master – Must be one who has a good command of the English Language, excellent pronunciation skill and having the ability and charisma to stimulate the interest of the contestants as well as the entire audience. Preferably, a graduate of English Language or related field. b. Time Keeper who must be very apt and accurate in keeping time. D. PROCEDURES: a. Participants to be selected to represent the districts – at least 2 who must be either in SS1 or SS2 b. Each contestant is to wear a number tag which must be bold c. Participants are to be arranged to sit on the two sides of the Quiz Master facing the audience d. Participants are to introduce themselves one after the other amidst loud applause from the audience e. The Quiz master is to read out the rules of the contest to the participants to the audience. These include:, (i) time allowed for each question,(ii) audience involvement: loud clapping and cheering of contestants especially for correctly spelt words; penalty f. g. h. i. j. k. l. m. n. o. for interference such as whispering of answers which may lead to the contestant losing that chance or being disqualified, etc. The Quiz Master select question randomly without bias for participants from the pool of questions available. The Quiz Master is to clearly read out the question – that is pronouncing the word which the participant is to spell. He is to repeat this for not more than 3 times before the participant is to begin to spell the word. PLEASE NOTE that the participant is free to ask the quiz master to give the origin of the word, state if it is a noun, verb or adjective and may be, use the word in a sentence. The participant has 10 seconds to spell the word correctly. The time starts reading after the quiz master has pronounced the word for the 3rd time. Each correctly spelt word is to be loudly applauded by the audience. Words not correctly spelt should be thrown to the audience to spell. There should be a prize for each member of the audience who correctly spells a word. But whereas no one is able to spell the word correctly, the quiz master is to spell out the words and demand for applauds from the audience. The competition shall be in two stages. The first stage is the preliminary stage in which all participants will be given a chance to continue whether he gets a word correctly or not. The second stage is the ‘knock-out’ stage. Any contestant who fails a word here leaves the stage. The competition is to continue until the 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions are determined. Where there is a tie between two or more contestants, more questions are to be asked to untie the knot. Worthy prizes are to be given to the best three contestants. Prize-given ceremony should be made to be colorful. Where possible, the State Overseer, Regional Overseer, Group Pastor, as the case may be, with other pastors should be involved in the award giving ceremony. E. Where a word has a British and American spelling ONLY THE BRITISH spelling should be accepted. c. Where a word contain the same letters following each other (e.g, “ss” or “pp”) they must be spelt separately. Do not allow the use of “double s” or “double p”. This is to make for clarity and avoid confusion. d. The words listed above may be substituted with other words as may deem necessary. e. A copy of a standard dictionary should be at hand should any argument of confusion arise on a word. f. Encourage the participants and audience to write down each correctly spelt word. This in a way will help build up their word power. Thank you.
