What is going on at GCSE
GCSE PE– All year 11 students have now completed their Personal Exercise Programme and have
started to revisit key areas of the course to ensure that they are fully prepared for the final exam in May. We
are currently awaiting to hear from our Practical Moderator, this will happen during February, where we will
be informed about our practical moderation date and the activities that will be assessed. The class will be
refining their skills in these activities and undergoing an Analysis of Performance in their chosen sport.
Trampolining sessions are currently on every Wednesday 3-4, where we have an external coach in, helping the
GCSE students to perfect their skills and routines. The Badminton Officials within the group have been asked to
officiate at the County Badminton Finals in Tidworth on 4th February, which is a real honour (and a further
chance to improve their practical grade), well done to them .
GCSE PE – Year 10 students have recently sat an end of topic test on methods and principles of training
and have received their results. They have now moved onto looking at exercise sessions and the importance of
a warm-up and cool-down. A coach from Badminton England has been secured to train the class to become
Young Badminton Officials, this will be happening in March. This qualification can then be used to officiate
inter-house badminton matches and possibly the County School Games Final.
Some of the Year 10 GCSE group attended a ‘Get Set to make a change’ roadshow in Cardiff in
November and met Olympian Tim Bailie and
Paralympian Natalie Jones. Pupils held the torches
from the two torch relays and also a London 2012 Olympic
Gold and Bronze medal. At the roadshow they learnt
leadership skills and have been given the opportunity to plan
and run an Olympic-Legacy-themed event for our feeder
Primary School. Watch this space for more details!
Keeping on top of the BTEC

BTEC Level 2 Year 10 – These students are currently looking at the second Unit of the course
which is Practical Sport Performance. Students will assess two different activities looking at the rules
and regulations that govern these activities as well as learning important skills and tactics. They are
also welcome to join the support sessions held every Friday after school in computer room 1A.
Up in year 13
BTEC Level 3 Year 13 – These students have been studying the
techniques used by successful coaches. They are using this information
to review the sessions that they lead with our younger students and
seeing how they could develop their own coaching techniques further
through writing a development plan.

Sportivate
We have had the opportunity to host a new style of Badminton from Badminton England, funded by
Sportivate (a charity linked to the Youth Sports Trust.) This badminton is called ‘Smash Up’ and
encourages pupils to come along and complete a set of challenges that are not associated to the
more traditional style of badminton. Pupils are able to bring devices to play their choice of music on
the wifi speakers that are provided in the session. This club commences on 30th January and will run
between 3-4pm every Thursday until further notice. All are welcome.

News this week from Cameron:
“He had a fantastic competition this week at Falcon's gym in Barnstaple, a very long day for
him as his brother was also competing, and was on at 8.30 am and Cameron's competition
didn't start until 3.15pm.
The competition was South West Apparatus, Cameron was competing against the Great
Britain Under 14's Champion, so a very tough competition for him as well.”
Results –
Bronze medal on vault
Silver medal on parallel bars
and Bronze medal overall.
His next competition is The Welsh Championships on 1st March 2014.

Bath Rugby Superstars
On Saturday 14th December a group of students went along to see a fundraising event organised by
Bath Rugby. It was based around the TV programme Superstars and involved a number of Bath
based business entering teams in to a competition of different sporting challenges. The ‘Superstar’
allocated to the teams we supported were Caryl Thomas (Welsh International Ladies Rugby
Player) and Danny Grewcock (Bath RFC and Ex England International Rugby Player ). We
created banners which we took to the event and cheered on our teams whilst they undertook some
gruelling challenges including a plank competition. This involved holding a plank position until all the
other competitors dropped out with the longest time being 8 minutes 31 seconds.
It was a great to see how the elite athletes coped in the different sporting challenges and at the end
of the morning we were able to get the signatures of the different famous athletes. Below are some
pictures of the event.
Thank you
A big thank you to the girls in the Year 10 GCSE class officiating at the High 5s Netball Festival, which

Chapmanslade Primary competing. With Bitham Brook emerge as the winners and progressing to the
next round of the School Games.
If any parents know of any businesses that wish to sponsor
one of our sports teams, then please get in contact with the
