Zeus’ Mighty Baseball Team Baseball Cards of Greek Gods Eleanor Rank 11/16/2012 Lesson created for a Sophomore World History Class. This lesson requires students to work in groups of 2-3 in order to research and create baseball cards on select Greek gods and goddesses. INTRO: This lesson involves Greek Mythology. The students will watch two brief YouTube videos and then research a Greek god or goddess of their choice. Once they have enough research they will create a baseball card for the deity of their choice and present it to the class. STANDARDS: Social Studies Strand 2 (World History) Concept 2 PO 3. Analyze the enduring Greek and Roman contributions and their impact on later civilization Social Studies Strand 4 (Geography) Concept 2 PO 1. Identify the characteristics that define a region: b. human processes such as religion, political organization, economy, and democracy English Language Arts and Literacy: 9-10.WHST.4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. Visual Arts Strand 1 Concept 4 PO 101: Select and use subject matter and/or symbols in his or her own art work. LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students will be able to describe how Greek gods and mythology are present in today’s culture through group presentation. Students will be able to identify why Greek Mythology shaped different regions through a group presentation. Students will be able to clearly and efficiently describe a Greek deity by writing facts on the back of a baseball card. Students will display in their art symbols which represent a Greek god or goddess by creating a baseball card. ASSESSMENT: Students will be assessed on their understanding of Greek gods and goddesses by creating a baseball card for a deity of their choice and presenting it to the class. The attached rubric will be used to assess each student individually based on their contributions to the baseball card and how well they worked with their group. The total points for this project will be 20 points. ANTICIPATORY SET: The introduction to this lesson will be asking the students what some ways are in which people explain phenomenon or why things are the way they are. The next question will be asking the students if they know how Ancient Greeks explained the workings of the world and that will lead into a discussion of what the class knows about Greek mythology.
