Structure of the
Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE)
• Usually completed over 2 years
• Students must pass at least 16 units including at least 8 units
at Year 12 level.
• Only compulsory subject is English
• Subjects at year 11 level are called Units 1&2 while subjects at
year 12 level are called Units 3&4.
Structure of the Victorian Certificate of
Education (VCE)
• Students will choose 6 subjects in Year 11 and 5 subjects in
Year 12.
• Students may choose to undertake a Unit 3&4 subject while
in Year 11.
• Within subjects chosen students can include VET subjects.
• Assessment in VCE Units is by a mixture of School Assessed
Coursework (SACs) and Exams.
• If students require an ATAR for tertiary education they will be
required to complete their VCE.
• Subjects are listed in the College Handbook.
Structure of the Victorian Certificate
of Applied Learning (VCAL)
• Can be completed within 1 year
• Can be achieved at either Foundation level, Intermediate
Level or Senior level (Year 12 only)
• Students must pass subjects within each of these 5 strands

Structure of the Victorian Certificate
of Applied Learning (VCAL)
• Students must pass at least 10 units.
• VCE units will count towards getting a VCAL Certificate
• Assessment in VCAL is by demonstrating competencies in a
number of outcomes.

WHEN CHOOSING A VCE/VCAL STUDY PROGRAM
• Think about what interests you
• Undertake studies that you like or are good at or that you
could be successful in
• Know what the extra requirements for each subject is i.e.
work placement, camps etc.
• Talk to your present school careers advisor
• Check out the Job Guide 2016
• Check out a VTAC – Victorian Tertiary Admissions Guide 2016
• Attend Open day and ask questions

University Course requirements
• Each institution has pre-requisite subjects that you need to
study (plus extra requirements – like folios of work)
• You must have studied the required subjects to be eligible for
selection into courses
• Plan for 2 years

Vocational Education and Training (VET) for VCE and VCAL
Students
• Certificate II or III Qualifications
• Scored Assessment and/or enhanced ATAR
• Training Provided by Qualified, Industry Trained Staff
• Trade Training Centre access
• Workplace experience including structured workplace learning
(while this is not compulsory for all VET programs it is highly
recommended).
School-based Apprenticeship & Traineeships
• School-based Apprenticeships & Traineeships (SBAT’s) can be completed as part
of a VCE or VCAL program.
• Certificate II or III Qualifications
• Can provide Scored Assessment and/or enhanced ATAR for VCE students plus
units at the 1 / 2 and/or 3 / 4 level
• Can fulfill WRS and ISS requirements for VCAL students
• Students must complete an average of 13 hours per week of training and
employment during school hours
• Students can complete an SBAT in any industry as long as they can find an
employer
• Program usually completed over 12 – 24 months. Cert III SBAT’s roll into full-time
• Students who have an SBAT should bring a copy of training plan to enrolment

Developing a sense of belonging and pride in the college:
• Distinctions in National Science, English, Mathematics and
Languages competitions.
• The performance by the College’s music students at various
local, regional and state wide forums
• Participation by large numbers of Music and Dance students
in district and state extravaganzas such as The Beat and The
State Schools Spectacular.

the Victorian Secondary Schools’
Sports Association.
• In most sports successful teams/
individuals have the opportunity compete at Regional, State
and National Level. State Finalists in Swimming, Athletics,
Cross Country, Golf, Hockey, Netball, Basketball, Softball and
the Baseball Team are the State Champions

COUNSELLING AND SUBJECT SELECTION
This process takes place in the 7-10 colleges from August 18th 2015.
Preliminary choices are due at Mildura Senior College by Friday 28th August 2015.
Mildura Senior College staff will assist in course counselling.

All students are to attend one enrolment session at Mildura Senior College and must
be accompanied by a parent or guardian. If you cannot attend your designated
session, please contact MSC to arrange another evening or time.
The Enrolment Process
YEAR 11 ORIENTATION DAYS
This program is aimed at making the transition to Mildura Senior College
as smooth as possible. We encourage all prospective students to attend this
program.
The program is for two days as follows:
• Tuesday 8th December and Wednesday 9th December 2015
• Students will get the opportunity to attend lessons of their year 11 subjects
and the College staff are available to help students with any enrolment or
booklist problems.
• Wednesday 9th December 2015 (from 3.30pm)
This day will be a chance for student to come in and change subjects or
discuss any concerns.
Students must confirm their enrolment by the 1st week in
December. This information is located in the College Handbook
and on our Website.
