PCC RDA CONSER Standard Record

(CSR)

in RDA instruction number order

Part 2 of 3

Presented by UC Berkeley

Spring 2014

Learning Objectives

• Apply the CSR (PCC Core) and UC Berkeley Policy

Statements to describe textual serials and integrating resources (non-rare) in several formats: print, online, tangible electronic, microform

• Distinguish substantive differences between

AACR2 rules/AACR2 version of CCM & CSR and

RDA instructions (plus local guidelines) for PCC

Core elements

• Exercise appropriate judgment when reviewing and editing existing copy for the local catalog

@ UCB

2

Training Overview

• Day 1: CONSER/PCC Core elements in RDA

Chapters 1-2

• Day 2 (today): CONSER/PCC Core elements in

RDA Chapters 3-end

• Day 3: making changes/working with copy

Media Type & Carrier Type

RDA 3.2

& RDA 3.3

• MARC 33X: same meaning and application as for monographs

• For print textual resources:

336 __ $a text $b txt $2 rdacontent

337 __ $a unmediated $b n $2 rdamedia

338 __ $a volume $b nc $2 rdacarrier

• For non-print, use other Media Type and

Carrier Type terms as applicable

@ UCB

6

Media Type & Carrier Type cont’d

RDA 3.2

& RDA 3.3

• Example: online textual resources:

336 __ $a text $b txt $2 rdacontent

337 __ $a computer $b c $2 rdamedia

338 __ $a online resource $b cr $2 rdacarrier

– $b codes are optional, the rest is required

• Textual resources with any Media Type other than “unmediated” also need MARC 007

@ UCB

7

Extent

RDA 3.4

• When is it required for serials & IRs?

– All formats: whenever resource is complete and total extent is known

• Serials: required for ceased titles even when total extent is not known; give term only

300 __ $a volumes

• IRs: P/N guidelines recommend using

“1 online resource” even when not complete

@ UCB

8

Extent cont’d

RDA 3.4

• When is it required for serials & IRs? cont’d

– Tangible non-print formats: when currently published; give term only

300 __ $a computer discs

• RDA 3.4.1.3 calls for using Carrier Type terms from RDA 3.3.1.3, but:

• LC-PCC PS 3.4.1.3 Alternative allows using a term in common usage (e.g. “CD-ROM”)

@ UCB

9

Dimensions

RDA 3.5

• When is it required?

– Serials: for all non-print tangible resources

– IRs: for all tangible resources per UCB PS 3.5

• Expand RDA 3.5.1.4 for instructions on each carrier type

• Discs: follow UCB PS 3.5.1.4.4: record diameter of discs in inches

– One of the few places in RDA where abbreviations are still used (see RDA Appendix B)

@ UCB

10

Note on Changes in Carrier Characteristics

RDA 3.21.4

• PCC Core for any change that does not require a new description

– E.g.: change from CD-ROM to DVD-ROM

• Serials: make a note as in RDA 3.21.4.3.1

• IRs: change description to latest iteration; may make a note on previous characteristics

@ UCB

11

Uniform Resource Locator

RDA 4.6

• At UCB, used in:

– Online version bibs

– Print version serial bibs where we have online access

Never add an institution-specific URL to an OCLC master record

– Examples:

• Any URL that is different for different institutions

• Any URL that is restricted to UC campus IP range

@ UCB

12

Content Type

RDA 6.9

• One of the 33Xs: 336

– Also OCLC Fixed Field “Type” (MARC Leader/06)

• Only predominant Content Type is PCC Core

@ UCB

13

Language of Expression

RDA 6.11

• No change from AACR2

• Record in OCLC Fixed Field “Lang” (MARC

008/35-37)

• Also use MARC 041 if necessary – for multiple languages

• Use codes from MARC Code List for Languages

(also available in Cataloger’s Desktop)

Identifying Works and Expressions

RDA Chapter 6

• “main entry” = AAP for the work/expression in hand

100/110/111 + 245, or

245 alone, or

100/110/111 + 240, or

130

• “added entry” = AAP for a related work/expression

700/710/711$a$t and 730

800/810/811$a$t and 830

@ UCB

19

Authorized Access Point Representing a Work

RDA 6.27.1

• Consists of two parts:

– Name of a PFC, if applicable

– Preferred title

• Start at RDA 6.27.1.1

– follow references to other sections of

Chapter 6, and other chapters, as indicated

@ UCB

20

Are there any named creators?

RDA 19.2.1.1

• Corporate Bodies Considered to Be Creators

– RDA 19.2.1.1.1 = AACR2 21.1B2

• Persons or Families Considered to Be Creators of

Serials

– RDA 19.2.1.1.3 similar to LCRI 21.1A2

• Named creator: use MARC 100/110/111

(“entry under name”)

• No named creator: no MARC 100/110/111

(“entry under title”)

Preferred Title for the Work

RDA 6.2.2

• Similar concept to AACR2’s “uniform title”

• Usually apply RDA 6.2.2.4, Works Created after

1500:

“the title in the original language by which the work has become known”

• For separately cataloged supplements or parts, apply RDA 6.2.2.9 in conjunction with RDA

6.27.2.2, Exception for serials & IRs: combine the preferred title for the larger work with the preferred title for the part

$a Human gene therapy. $p Clinical development.

Additions to Access Points Representing Works

RDA 6.27.1.9

• In RDA, an AAP for a work must be unique!

• How to do that? See LC-PCC PS 6.27.1.9, section “Serials (Including Numbered and

Unnumbered Monographic Series)”

• Add PCC Core elements from RDA 6.3-6.6

• May also use for similar but not identical AAPs

• Add qualifiers in parentheses at the end of the title (not in a separate subfield)

AAP for the Work/Expression:

Putting It All Together

• Is there a named creator?

– Yes: use AAP for the creator in MARC

100/110/111

– No: do not use MARC 100/110/111

• Does the preferred title differ from the title proper (e.g. are any qualifiers required)?

– Yes: record title in MARC 130 (if no 100/110/111) or 240

– No: let the title proper of the manifestation in

MARC 245 stand as the preferred title

35

Language of the Content

RDA 7.12

• PCC recommended but not Core

• Used for expansion or refinement of what is in

FF Lang and 041

• Required if you are applying RDA 7.13.2…

@ UCB

36

Form of Notation: Script

RDA 7.13.2

• PCC Core “if a language is commonly written in more than one script, and if the resource is in a script other than the primary one for the language.”

• See examples at LC-PCC PS 7.13.2.3 & 7.13.2.4

• You (should) already know whether you need to use it

@ UCB

37

PFCs Associated with a Work

RDA Chapter 19

• What’s PCC Core?

Only the PFC whose name is part of AAP for the work (i.e. MARC 100/110/111)

– Apply RDA 6.27-6.31 to determine this

– Don’t always have one, but if you do:

• Usually: Creator (RDA 19.2)

• Rarely: Other PFC Associated with a Work

(RDA 19.3) (mostly legal works)

@ UCB

38

PFCs Associated with a Work cont’d

RDA Chapter 19

• PCC recommended but not Core:

– Any additional Creators (e.g. for collaborative works)

– Any additional Other PFCs Associated with a

Work (e.g. issuing body that is not also a creator)

@ UCB

39

Contributor

RDA 20.2

• Not actually PCC Core for serials & IRs

• Often not named for serials

• Any that are named typically don’t have a relationship with the resource for all or most of its existence

• Always record in MARC 7XX, never 1XX

Related WEMI

RDA Chapters 24-28

• CONSER practice: do not use Appendix J relationship designators with linking entries

(MARC 76X-78X)

– Do not use $i at all if MARC tag + indicators unambiguously express the relationship

– If explanation needed, use free text phrase in $i

(may also add note (e.g. MARC 580) if necessary)

• MARC 787 relationships no longer required; use only if necessary for user tasks

@ UCB

48

Compilation of Expressions

LC-PCC PS 26.1

• What does this mean? Same full text in more than one language within each volume

– E.g. Canadian government publications

• What to do? Give analytical AAPs for original language expression and at least one translation

– Not sure which language is “original”? Choose language of title proper

@ UCB

49

Compilation of Expressions cont’d
