Engaging with Horizon 2020
Why is SME involvement important?
• 99% of all European business are small and medium sized enterprises
(SMEs)
• 85% of net new jobs in the EU between 2002 and 2010 were created
by SMEs
• SMEs are quick to adapt to and exploit new market opportunities
• Taking innovative ideas to the market
AIM: 20% of the total budget for Pillar 2 and Pillar 3 will go to SMEs.
SMES help to increase the economic impact of project results by a
company-centric and market-driven approach.
Benefit for SMEs: aim of strengthening the innovation capacity of SMEs
and creating value on the market and/or into society.

What is the goal of Horizon2020?
A means to drive economic growth and create jobs
Research is an investment in our future and so put it at the heart of the
EU’s blueprint for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth and jobs.
To couple research and innovation, through excellent science,
industrial leadership and tackling societal challenges.
The goal is to ensure Europe produces world-class science, removes
barriers to innovation and makes it easier for the public and private
