Print Media: Yearbook 1 21G Course Outline Mr. Manness Print Media: Yearbook I 21G (l .0 credit): The main focus of this course is production of real print media, mainly the VMC Yearbook. The expectations are very high, and require a lot of commitment to the class. In order to be successful you must be dedicated, on task, productive, meet deadlines, and be reliable. Think of this course as if you are working for a publication; deadlines have to be met no matter what. This requires you to pull your own weight if we are to produce on time, and finally demands that we work together as a team. Students will learn the techniques and principals of print media journalism, the graphic principles of layout and design, and the fundamentals of managing a small business. Students in Print Media: Yearbook I will develop abilities in gathering information, writing copy and captions, understanding components of quality photography, copy editing skills, and techniques of headlines. Caution: One word of caution: this course is unlike any other courses you may be used to, as much of the work is individual and independent. If you are the type of person who is skilled at self motivation you need not worry, however if you are not that type of person you may need to develop some of those self motivational skills quickly. Evaluation: Your performance in Print Media will largely be based on your ability to produce technically and aesthetically appealing print media. Your acquisition and application of print media design knowledge is imperative to marks, and assignment evaluation will be determined through negotiations with teacher and student. The goal is to learn and grow as a designer, and for you to be able to narrate this growth through a conference with your instructor. Your participation in the grading process is important and valued. Banked Time: Students may be asked to spend additional time, outside of the regular scheduled class, designing and taking photos, therefore students may bank time and use it when their portion of the work for deadlines is complete and has been cleared with the instructor. For example: a student has one hour and 15 minutes banked, they are then able to take one full class as a spare as well as a 7 minute break in another class, or leave 7 minutes early. This time will be logged by the teacher. Editors and Committees: We will have editors for each major section of the yearbook, for example: Sports, Clubs, Performing Arts, etc. Each editor will have a sub-committee to help them in the process. It is imperative that these teams work well together and communicate effectively throughout the course.
