EVACUATION TESTING - TEMPLATE MESSAGES FROM SCHOOL/COLLEGE BUSINESS MANAGERS or BUILDING ADMINISTRATORS: Dear Colleagues: As part of Temple’s ongoing commitment to emergency preparedness and becoming TU Ready, a mandatory evacuation drill will be conducted for all buildings that are occupied by students and/or employees during the spring semester. Emergency response and evacuation procedures will be tested and evaluated during these drills. The purpose of evacuation drills is to prepare building occupants for an organized evacuation in case of fire or other emergency. During each exercise students and employees will: (1) practice evacuation procedures and efficient building clearance; (2) familiarize themselves with the location of exits and rallying points; (3) recognize the needs of students and colleagues who may require special assistance; and (4) spread the word to the university community about what it means to be TU Ready. The mandatory evacuation drill for {name of building} is scheduled for: {day of week, month & day, at time} Please take a moment to add this date to your calendar and to review the evacuation plan and emergency procedures for your building. Temple students, faculty and staff can visit www.temple.edu/tuready for more information. TU Ready is Temple University’s emergency preparedness program. It is a critical resource to notify students and employees of serious incidents and prepare you when it’s time to respond. Now it is up to each of us to take the time to learn about TU Ready and register for TU Alert. Your participation is essential to making our preparedness initiative a success. Since this is an announced test I encourage you to share this information with your faculty, staff, and students. If your school/college/department has procedures in place for evacuations (this may include plans, evacuation leaders, hall monitors etc.) please share them in advance of this exercise. We anticipate each evacuation taking less than 30 minutes; however this time frame is dependent upon your cooperation and the pace in which we have each building free of occupants. Contact the Office of the Fire Marshal if you have any questions or concerns regarding the evacuations. Office of the Fire Marshal: http://www.temple.edu/facilities/departments-fire-marshal Phone number: (215) 204-8687 FOLLOW UP EMAILS CAN INCLUDE: Evacuation procedures are detailed on the TU Ready website (www.temple.edu/tuready). The following are some important reminders: Be aware of your closest exit. In an evacuation, {name of building} occupants should go to Rally Point { } located by {nearest landmark structure} Do not re-enter the building until given permission by the campus police or the fire department. Do not use elevators. They will stop if power fails, causing occupants to become trapped. Persons needing assistance to exit the building should go or be taken into the fire exit and remain on the landing. Once situated on the stair landing, call Campus Safety Services (215-204-1234) or the Philadelphia Fire Department (911). Identify which stairway you are in and which floor you are located. All employees and students should be aware of individuals who may require assistance and plan to accompany the person until help arrives. Keep all fire exit and corridor doors closed at all times. If at any time you observe these doors propped or tied open, please close them and report the location to Campus Safety Services.
