MATH 031/032/101/102 Fall 2015 15 Week Term ALEKS Hours of Operation ◦ Sunday 2:00pm – 6:00pm ◦ Monday - Thursday 9:30am – 8:30pm ◦ Friday 9:30am - 3:00pm ◦ Saturday Closed Phone Number: 843-661-8154 ABSOLUTELY NO FOOD, DRINKS, PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES, TOBACCO OR VAPOR PRODUCTS OR CHILDREN ARE ALLOWED IN THE HUB, LECTURE, TUTORING OR TESTING ROOMS. NO EXCEPTIONS!! Hub students attend both lecture and Hub classes. The Math Hub is a computer lab with ALEKS and MyMathLab software installed. In the Hub, students work alone or with help from an instructor or tutor. Help is also available in the Hub outside of class time. Hub classes are modified self-paced. Students may work at their own pace, but must finish the modules by due dates throughout the semester and the course by the last Hub time for their class. To access ALEKS from the www.fdtc.edu website, click on Students in the top right hand corner, then click on ALEKS. Put up the yellow HELP sign when you want the tutor or instructor to help with a question, start a test, etc. Someone will come as soon as possible. Continue to work on the problem or something else while you are waiting. The pink TEST sign should be raised whenever you are taking a Knowledge Check or a Scheduled Assessment. There are many people who are here to help you be successful in the Hub such as: Course Instructors, Tutors, Assistants, Work Study Students, Other Faculty, Math Department Chair. Everyone that helps you in the Hub is assisting your instructor. They are to be treated with the same respect you give to your instructor. Guests frequently visit the Hub and should also be respected. The tutors in the Math Hub are assistants to your instructor. They are people with strong math abilities, but do not “have all the answers”. Tutors are here to offer assistance, guidance and support, NOT to do the work for the student. Students outnumber the tutors, so please be patient if you have a question. Raise the “HELP” flag on the computer monitor and continue working on a different exercise until a tutor can help. The Math Hub does not offer private math tutoring. “Assessment & Learning in Knowledge Spaces” How Does ALEKS work??? Aleks is an individualized, adaptive learning tool that provides a constant cycle of learning and assessment based on each individual student’s learning rate. Aleks uses artificial intelligence to determine what you know, what you do not know, and what you are ready to learn. Aleks will only allow you to work on topics that you are ready to learn. Aleks will assess you in two ways. Knowledge Checks and Scheduled Assessments. Knowledge Checks – Are not password protected and can be completed anywhere. Aleks automatically assigns you Knowledge Checks when you complete 5 hours of work in Aleks or learn 20 objectives. Knowledge Checks do not affect your average but will affect the amount of work you have to do in your “pie”. Scheduled Assessments – Are password protected, must be completed in one sitting, and can only be taken in Hub class or the Hub Testing Room. They are assigned to you when you complete each module with 100%. Scheduled Assessments do affect your average and will also affect the amount of work you have to do in your “pie”. The Initial Assessment is meant to be taken “cold turkey”….to see what you really know. Do not try to beat the Knowledge Checks by doing a “little review”. Even if you “beat” a Knowledge Check, you will not have a sufficient knowledge base to do future work and will not be prepared for the Scheduled Assessments. Instead, let the Knowledge Check identify where you need to do work. Then spend your study time where you need it. It is alright to choose the “I Don’t Know” button if you are doing a Knowledge Check and you do not know how to do a particular problem or problems. When doing a Knowledge Check (without password) or when doing a Scheduled Assessment (password protected), you can NOT go back to previous problems. You can only work forward. Electronic course management access code, graphing calculator and ear buds as listed on syllabus are required for the course. Students who do not have the required materials and/or who are not enrolled in the approved electronic course management system by the end of the second Friday of the semester may be withdrawn by the instructor. Note: A textbook is NOT required for this course. If you would like to purchase a color copy of the textbook, you can order a loose leaf three hole punched book through ALEKS for $15 (plus tax)…free shipping. Mat 031and 032 Textbook Mat 101and 102 Textbook Use the following to select the correct formula sheet for use in the Math Hub: Math 031: Yellow Math 032: Yellow Math 101:Blue Math 102: Blue The formula sheet handout in your ALEKS course site is the correct one for your course. * The Hub laminated formula sheets will only be given out while testing. You must provide your own when working on Pie problems or Knowledge Checks. A calculator can be used for any exercises or tests, including the final exam for MAT 031, 032, 101, and 102. A TI-83, 83+, 84, or 84+ is the required calculator for all four courses. TI-89, TI-92 and TI-Inspire are NOT allowed to be used on any test. An Important Note about Calculators: A TI graphing calculator is required for this course. Students are advised not to add any programs or applications to their graphing calculator. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that ALL added programs/applications have been removed. If your calculator has added programs/applications, ask your instructor about removing them. The use of added programs/applications is not allowed while testing and will be considered a violation of the college’s academic dishonesty policy. ***Math 101/102 students will be required to use the gold FDTC graphing calculator supplied by the Hub for out of class testing.*** You will find your syllabus and a course timeline online once you log into your math course by selecting the on on the top left side of the main page of the course website then click on the “Instructor Recourses” icon. You should print a copy of these and place in your notebook or composition book for reference. As stated on your syllabus: It is the student's responsibility to verify that he/she has the appropriate prerequisite. If the student does not have the appropriate prerequisite, it is in his/her best interest to withdraw immediately and see his/her advisor for appropriate placement in the math sequence. If the student has any questions concerning his/her prerequisite level, he/she should discuss this with his/her advisor or the instructor immediately. 15 Week Term: T,TH classes: Weekly attendance is two Hub days and two lecture periods per week. No more than three absences from the Hub or lecture classes during Fall term will be allowed for T, TH classes. Every student is required to come to the Hub at the scheduled class times on his/her schedule. Students are responsible for checking online messages daily through Desire2Learn and your FDTC email account and are accountable for all information in the messages. Exams will be given during the final exam week as per the college’s final exam schedule. All exams will be given in the Hub. For Math 031, 032, 101 and 102 Scheduled Assessments (password protected)…..40% *Four given and each one counts 10%* Pie Objectives…..30% Consists of Pie problems and Knowledge Checks (no passwords) *Four Pie Objective Modules and lowest one grade is dropped. Each remaining module grade counts 10% Cumulative Final Exam…..30% * Completed in Desire2Learn. 33 Multiple Choice Questions Your course is based on four modules. A Scheduled Assessment will be given when you complete each module with 100%. The grades for all of your assignments can be seen at any point during the semester in your ALEKS course online gradebook. NOTE: Your grade will increase as the semester progresses. The harder you work and the more you learn…the higher your grade becomes! MAT 031/032 Grades Possible grades in MAT 031 are A*, B*, C*, D*, or F*. Possible grades in MAT 032 are SC*, D*, or F*. A grade of SC* reflects Successful Completion of MAT 032 and is received from an in-class grade of A*, B*, or C*. A grade of D* or F* means you receive no credit for this course. These students then receive a grade of “F” for the course. Therefore, the FDTC Mathematics Department strongly urges students to withdraw from the hub course if these minimum requirements have not been completed. A withdrawal at this point assigns a grade of “W” to the course which does not affect the student’s GPA. Math Hub students should have demonstrated MASTERY of the following material by the given w/d date. If the student has not completed these requirements, he/she will be urged to withdraw from the course. It will also state that you understand the rules and procedures for the Math Hub. You will be asked to sign this agreement during class time. This agreement must be completed before you will be allowed to begin any work in ALEKS. After completing the Agreement Form, you may begin working on your Initial Assessment and Pie. How to Register and Get Started in ALEKS Registration on ALEKS is done online in the Hub. You will need a new ALEKS access code that will last for a certain amount of time!!!!!! (18 week or 52 week) An instructor will help everyone get registered online during the first or second class meeting, according to your schedule. Students must have a valid email address in order to login/register for ALEKS. The Hub may have up to 50 students plus instructors, tutors, and assistants in the area at the same time.
