Therefore, the need is increasing with each passing day that the Network Engineer all over the world. Network Engineers are responsible for designing, installing, deploying, maintaining and troubleshooting product or test networks, and often must also work with users. Theoretical and practical knowledge of high quality Network Engineers will be preferred in the future. Cisco environment and devices have a significant place in practical networking applications. Also, we have need high quality network engineers in Turkey. Network performance is an important factor in the productivity of an organization. One of the technologies used to improve network performance is the separation of large broadcast domains into smaller ones. By design, routers will block broadcast traffic at an interface. However, routers normally have a limited number of LAN interfaces. A router’s primary role is to move information between networks, not provide network access to end devices. The role of providing access into a LAN is normally reserved for an access layer switch. A virtual local area network (VLAN) can be created on a Layer 2 switch to reduce the size of broadcast domains, similar to a Layer 3 device. VLANs are commonly incorporated into network design making it easier for a network to support the goals of an organization. Because of the above reasons, A virtual local area network (VLAN) will be investigated and applied in this project. Students will have the opportunity to work seeing the actual working area of network engineering by using Cisco Packet Tracer Simulation program and Cisco real devices with this senior project. Packet Tracer is a networking learning tool that supports a wide range of physical and logical simulations. It also provides visualization tools to help you understand the internal workings of a network. The project will cover how to configure, manage, and troubleshoot VLANs and VLAN trunks. It will also examine security considerations and strategies relating to VLANs and trunks, and best practices for VLAN design. By the end of this project, students will be able to configure and troubleshoot and switches and resolve common issues with VLANs . Objectives: - To investigate and implement VLANs. - To design a network area based on VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) with Cisco Packet Tracer Simulation Program and Cisco switches. - To configure, manage and troubleshoot VLAN and VLAN trunks. It will also examine security considerations and strategies relating to VLANs and trunks. Outcomes : ‐ Different VLANS for each department will be designed in a network area. ‐ Design a VLAN with using Cisco Packet Tracer Simulation Program. - Cisco based switches will be used in real world implementation. Required Resources: - Cisco Packet Tracer Program - At least 2 Switches (Cisco 2960 with 24 ports) - At least 3 PCs (Windows 7 or Windows 8) - Console cables to configure the Cisco IOS devices - Ethernet Cables Version: July 2015 CENG SP-FORM1 The design will involve at least 2 Cisco switches, at least 3 computers and 1 trunk link between the switches. Students create VLANs and assign switch ports. Also they will maintain VLAN port assignments and the VLAN Database. They have to use trunk link between switches. At the end of the project; they have to send some packets to the devices, then they have to verify and show their settings. Justification Novelty LAN switches can be divided into groups of ports called VLANs to improve network performance, management and security with using Cisco switches. Complexity To configure, manage and troubleshoot VLAN and VLAN trunks in network area. Student have no information about Cisco Environment. Firstly, students should learn to use Packet Tracer Program. Then, they have to create VLAN and assign switch ports with real Cisco devices. Two students are required for this project team. Constraints: economics, sustainability, environment, ethics, security, health, social and political issues, Risks involved Version: July 2015 The network security will be accomplished in VLAN by controlling which hosts can communicate. This project contributes to raise theoretical and practical knowledge of high quality Network Engineers in Turkey. Cisco Network Environment has to be used in this project. In addition, all students should be careful about copyright violations. Project involves protocol knowledge, network configurations and managements, network design and analysis of VLAN. The project team have to overcome many problems. Packet Tracer are going to help to students before the real network implementation in Cisco switches. Time consuming, failure of switch configuration in real implementations are possible risks in this projects.
