COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Students will acquire an understanding of the United States within
the context of history from the exploration to present day with an
emphasis on exploration through Reconstruction, including an
examination of Florida’s role. Critical concepts for this course
include: geography, politics and government, economics, conflict,
religion, ideology, innovations, and human rights. Emphasis will be
given to the Sunshine State Standards for United States History
Curriculum.

TEXTBOOK: Mc Graw Hill: The American Journey
Each desk will be assigned a textbook. If a student does not report
text missing, all students utilizing textbook prior to time reported
missing will be charged for the lost book. Students will also be
responsible for reporting any abuse of textbook. A textbook may be
checked out during the school year for student use at home from the
Media Center.
MASTERY TESTS/NINE WEEK EXAMS:
First Nine Weeks: United States geography and Beginnings to
Colonial Settlements ( -1770).
Second Nine Weeks: Creating a Nation and The New Republic
(1763-1825).
Third Nine Weeks: The Growing Nation (1820 – 1860).
Fourth Nine Weeks: The Civil War and Reconstruction (1846-1896).
GRADING POLICY: Nine Week Grades will be weighed as
follows:
20% Class Work
10% Homework / Projects
15% Quizzes
30% Tests
25% Quarterly Final Exam.

MATERIALS NEEDED: (1) Composition book to be left in class, (1) 1 inch
3 ring binder with two pockets, plenty of loose leaf paper inside binder, 2
working pencils at all times , 2 black or blue pens, 1 highlighter, pencil case, an
individual pencil sharpener with catch all for shavings, 1 ream copy paper
(extra credit points applied), 1 box tissues (extra credit points applied).
CLASSROOM RULES:
Be in your seat with ALL social studies materials on your desk BEFORE the
bell rings.
Stay in your seat unless you are granted permission to get up by the instructor.
Start your bellwork on your own by the time the bell rings. The first
assignment will be on the board.
Show respect to everyone and their property.
Raise your hand if you want to speak in class, ask a question or get out of your
seat. DO NOT CALL OUT!
Eating, drinking or chewing gum is not permitted in class.
All items which do not belong in class will be confiscated and turned into
the appropriate grade level office. (example: cell phones, video games,
pictures, lipstick, magazines, brushes, combs, etc… )
DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURES:
Warning: Verbal or Written
Parent Contact: Through Agenda, email or phone call.
Detention/Parent Contact
Referral to Guidance or Administration.
Any serious offenses will result in immediate referral to administration.
CRITERIA FOR STUDENT CONDUCT CODE:
4: Very constructive to learning
3: Generally supportive to learning
2: Detrimental to own learning
1: Detrimental to own learning and learning of others.
ABSENCES/MAKEUP WORK:
It is the student’s responsibility to make up missed work. Student should: 1)
check calendar in room, 2) make arrangements with teacher to work
before/after school, 4) check out a textbook from the Media Center.
Absence does not extend advanced due dates or post pone scheduled
assignments or tests. Students must make arrangements for preschool pass to
copy, make up or secure another student’s notes.
If long-range work is requested, work MUST be returned completed within a
week after returning to school.
Class time will not be given for make-up tests or work. Students must turn in
due assignments on date given or day immediately after absences.
