Exploring writing process with drafts, revisions, editing, and publishing. Daily Sharing Monthly Celebrations The formal district spelling program which includes tests every Friday. Section 1-High Frequency Words (sight words) Every spelling list will begin with sight words. These words are the most frequently used words in reading and writing. Many of these words cannot be sounded out phonetically or they break one of the common spelling rules. Section 2- Word Feature or Skill Words This section includes words that follow a particular letter combination pattern. For example: words containing "or." Each week a new letter combination or skill is introduced. Section 3- Challenge/Unit Words Each list includes a few words that usually relate to our integrated unit studies. Early Americans: Pioneers and Native Americans South America Early Earth Dinosaurs and Geology Identifying Feelings Problem Solving Learn how to problem solve social issues (i.e.: recess, playing fair) Students will visit the library weekly and check out one book each week. We are still waiting for our schedule so be watching for more information. Reading for 20 minutes each evening including stories read to the student. Math fact fluency (+, - to 20) practice at least three times a week. Incomplete work or make-up work from an absence. Weekly spelling word practice Special projects to extend our integrated unit learning. Home School Connections for Social Studies Any additional suggested practice activities listed on the Learning Gram to support classroom learning. I am safe. I am respectful. I am responsible. First Timers Club: ◦ Students receive one warning. ◦ Second reminder results in practicing the right way to accomplish the task at recess. ◦ If a student needs considerable redirection, I will send home a conference slip so you are aware of the problem. ◦ If further intervention is needed, I will talk with you and we can agree on a new strategy (like a behavior contract) or consequence. These go into the portfolio for May. All other work goes home once a month. Monday: Your child may bring in 10 of his/her favorite things for a special share along with the attached poster. Tuesday: Your child may bring in a favorite short book to read or have read to the class. Wednesday: A guest (like a parent or other relative or close friend of the family) is invited to eat lunch with the Student of the Week here at school. Lunch is from 12:05 to 12:45 PM. Please check in and out at Office A. Feel free to arrive early (12:00) to walk with our class to the lunchroom in Gym B. Thursday: Your child will be given a Student of the Week award from Principal Menard and myself. Friday: Your child may teach the class something of interest to them (no more than 20 minutes with or without your help, or show a special personal or family collection, etc. Please let me know by Wednesday if you plan to teach something. Our class makes a book of cards created by each student for the birthday child. Birthday boy/girl receives a book from me. We gather together and sing the Birthday song as a class. Summer birthdays are invited to celebrate on their half birthdays. I will send home a form to sign up.
