You may bring the following with you to the exam:




Visual literacy: rubric and notes on light and colour
Essay question: the novel you read for your book conference, and your one-pager
Annotation: close reading rubric
The Glass Castle: notes on presentations that you took in class or from the wiki
Part A Visual Literacy




Value 16
Participate in the in-class review and practice on January 19 and 20.
Review the power points on the wiki – Visual Literacy Describing Terms and Interpreting
and Evaluating
Review the notes on light and colour
Review the rubric and expectations
Part B Quotes/Passages from The Glass Castle
Value 10
Review all thesis statements and supporting quotes for the prezis for your class on The Glass
Castle. You can find the links to the prezis on the wiki. On your exam, there will be 2 quotes
from these presentations, along with their thesis statements. You will need to:



Identify the speaker of the quotes. (1)
Analyze the significance in terms of either plot, characterization, character relationships,
setting, theme, craft of writing or a combination of any of these. (2)
Explain how it either supports or FAILS to support the thesis statement. (2)

Part C Reading Essay

Value 50
Be prepared to discuss the following as they relate to the independently-chosen book on which
you did your book conference with me. You will be writing an essay on one or more of the
following aspects:





Word choice / vocabulary
Craft of writing
Genre
Prior knowledge
Theme/Thematic purpose





Part D Sight Piece Close Reading (Fiction)

Characterization
Plot structure
Voice
Setting
Etc

Review your notes on close reading, including the “annotation cheat sheet” I gave you.
Skills you will need to be able to demonstrate are in the following list. Ultimately, your close reading will
help you identify a theme of the piece.
a. Observations  Note/describe:

iii. figures of speech
iv. connections
v. word choice
vi. tone
vii. character actions/reactions
b. Questioning  Ask:
i. What does this mean?
ii. Where is this headed?
iii. Why is this here?
iv. Et cetera
c. Inference  Read between the lines:
i. This seems to symbolize...
ii. This suggests...
iii. This is making a comparison to...
iv. Et cetera
d. Evaluate  Add your thoughts/conclusions:
i. Therefore this proves that...
ii. But this is contradictory/wrong because...
iii. So the point can be summed up as...
iv. The significance of which is...

How to prepare for the exam:
1. Gather, organize, and review your notes.
2. Compile the most important material into brief, concise, keyword notes OR recopy
your notes (whatever you find to be most effective).
3. Practice doing close readings.
4. Stress a little (a little stress helps you focus).
5. Don’t stress a lot (too much stress will make you crash).
6. Get some exercise and stick to a nutritious diet through exam week.
7. Get your sleep.
8. Bring Ms. Loewen some chocolate – it might not help, but it certainly can’t hurt .
