Annual School Board Presentation for School Health Councils 2012-13 East Central Attendance Center East Central Lower Elementary SHC Report Our MARKETING TOOL was ED SAID. This group attended our school on April 19th to share with the students the importance of eating healthy. For the STAFF, we did Biggest Loser. For our STUDENTS, PTO purchased 2 hamster balls for the students to be active during P.E. We provided a visual bulletin board for students to see the healthy plate and placed pictures of healthy snacks on it. The librarian did a healthy hand washing lesson and made homemade sanitizer for each class. A few pieces of playground equipment is being replaced due to safety purposes. We have an X-Box Kinect for Citizens of the month. These students are allowed 20 minutes to interact with X-Box games. P.E. has integrated another X-Box into her classroom for rainy days. This is one of her movement stations. Library has a Wii for Star Student and a buddy. They can choose a game from Wii Sports. Two DVD’s (FIT KIDS’ WORKOUT)were purchased and available for checkout. East Central Upper Cindy Pry ,Health and Wellness, 2012-2013 High School Student Mentors, Indoor Exercise for Rainy Days, Physical Education - 50 Minutes per Week (Basketball, Kickball, Hoola Hoops, Jump Ropes, etc…), Strength & Balance Playground Equipment, Team Building Exercises (Kickball Tournaments, Field Day, etc…) Running Track- Students start each P.E. Session by running a lap on the track. The PE Coach marks their time each class and helps students work toward improving their time and distance. Five Senses Art Project- Students learned about the five senses while creating colorful art pieces. East Central Middle 2012-2013 Food Safety Video Pre/Post Test 8/2/12, Administration discussed the Bullying policy at beginning of the year, Classes do regular fitness tests to assess student’s level of fitness (Presidential Fitness Test) every 9 weeks…PE sets aside 1 day a week to focus on cardiovascular fitness. Using heart rate monitors purchased by grant money 2 years ago. PE also has speakers come in a talk to classes about Tobacco (Tobacco Free Coalition of Jackson Co.) - Kelly Lamb, Counselor does a student of the month, to promote and encourage students to show good character. The Health Council offers students and teachers the opportunity to get their BMI and % Body Fat assessed. (Handouts on BMI and Body Fat are also available) PE teachers have added music during class activities, playing a variety of music to get students more active. PE is also working on a PHSICAL EDUCATION web site to be linked to the school web site. o o o o Mission statement Rules and Procedures Activities – info and statistics to show importance of activities for fitness Grading criteria PE classes taught 1 health lesson per week, trying to focus on topics that were most relevant to middle school students. PE classes had guest speakers come in and talk to all classes about: o o o Dangers of Tobacco Importance of washing hands/spreading germs Hygiene (brushing teeth, using deodorant, etc.) The Middle school put on a Field Day, where students competed in numerous events. (This shows off student physical fitness as well as their teamwork and sportsmanship) School participated in the National Drink Milk Month, where posters were put up encouraging students and faculty to drink more milk. School snack sales met State and Federal guidelines for sale to middle school students. Throughout the year numerous teachers and students participated in several 5K and fun runs around the area, including the Azalea Trail and Hurley Hustle. School participates in selecting students every month for Pepsi Student of the Month. 1 boy and 1 girl from each grade are recognized for having outstanding character. 1 boy and 1 girl are selected from each grade at the end of the year and Pepsi Student of the Year. Many teachers select STAR students either weekly or monthly in their respective classes. Usually the student has worked hard in class and shown improvement as well as displayed a positive behavior and good character. 7th graders attended a Health Fair put on by Singing River Hospital, It was interactive and students got hands on experience about healthcare related fields. Ms. Susan Checkley from the department will be our inspector. She will inspect our facility three times, unannounced, during the school year. The Culinary Arts students were granted a catering license through the Department of Health. The Culinary Arts students will complete the Student Serv Safe Course in August and September. Upon testing they will receive a Food Handler’s Certificate. Four SMH Culinary Arts students competed on August 11 in the Great American Seafood Cookoff in New Orleans. They competed against teams from Arkansas, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Kansas, and Kentucky. This year the competition included a nutritional aspect. The students were judged on their culinary skills, presentation, knowledge of Gulf Coast seafood, safety and sanitation, and nutritional content. The entrée portion had to be less than 500 calories with moderate salt and moderate fat. The students won second place with their “Gulf Coast Bouillabaisse”. April 4, 2013 4 SMH Culinary Arts students were chosen again this year to represent the state of Mississippi in the Great American Seafood Cookoff in New Orleans in August. TATU - Teens against tobacco use-students have attended conferences and are spreading the message about the effects of tobacco use by setting up displays and giving facts over the announcements every morning. These TATU participants are also seeking pledges of students to stay tobacco free on the Great American Smoke-Out Day. This group will go to the middle school, upper elementary, and lower elementary to promote anti-tobacco. This spring the TATU group participated in the National Kick Butts Day. Fit For Life - Specialized class in which students are enrolled based on the decision to make a change in their lifestyle in regards to fitness and coordinated with area gyms where trainers have worked with these students and allow them to use their facility. Green Team - All SMH classrooms are collecting paper and plastic products for recycling. Mrs. Lynn Zimmerman’s science classes have placed tubs in each classroom for collecting these materials. Every Thursday her students pick up the tubs and take them out to the bin to be collected by Delta Sanitation. Mrs. Lynn Zimmerman SMH Science Instructor. SMH American Cancer Society Run/Walk - Mrs. Monique Farrington and Mr. Richard Humphries spearheaded this event in March to increase public awareness of this dreaded disease and to raise donations for the American Cancer Society. We had over 130 student and adult participants. $1000.00 was raised in donations. The SME Fun Run - 42 participants - all proceeds went SM East Building Fund. We also have a PT Competition team that trains weekly for athletic PT competitions (20 cadets), Lieutenant Colonel John Thompson SMH Senior Aerospace Science Instructor, AFJROTC Student Council - Social: We took student council representatives to the Mississippi State Association of Student Councils' annual convention. Our school was elected state vice president for the coming school year, and the students were able to network with other student leaders from around the state. Dina Holland SMH Principal St. Martin Middle Activities for Health Council 12-13 Every classroom has Germ X and Clorox wipes. Every classroom has It’s In Your Hands handouts. These show students how to cover their cough and wash hands. Every student does physical activities every day for 74 min. They are working on preparing for the Presidential Fitness Challenge. They stretch and do calisthenics (sit-ups, push-ups, and jumping jacks) for about 15-20 min every day. After their warm-up, they have a choice to do the activity for that day or walk for the rest of the period. Coach Foz has implemented Strength and Conditioning class for 7th and 8th graders. In PE they walk and run the high school track and also do Wii Fit tests or exercises inside. They MUST participate in activities in order to get a good grade in PE. We are having every student take Health every other week. We have Gatorade Machines, as well as water and juice for the students to buy drinks. We are making sure that we are allowing students to eat ONLY what is on the approved list from the district. Our faculty has started the 24 day challenge by Advocare to make sure that we are fit as well. We also have a group of teachers that are walking every day after school, and also on their off period for 30 min. 6 th grade teachers are doing Zumba after school and 7th grade teachers are going to Planet Fitness together. We send home a newsletter every month with health tips and hand washing instructions. St. Martin Upper District Health Council 2012/2013, Lisa Roberts-Mudgett The students have physical activity during PE, during Music class, and during their recess time. Instead of taking ecess away from students as a consequence, the students walk laps during recess as a consequence so that their physical requirements are still met. Science/Health teachers at SMUE have utilized a Reject All Tobacco (RAT) program in class with accompanying lessons. SMUE participated in Red Ribbon Week in the fall under the direction of our counselor, Mrs. Carroll. SMUE held a Hoops for Heart event in February; the students raised awareness of heart disease and also raised over $1000 for the American Heart Association. SMUE held its annual Field Day last week; the students had an enjoyable day competing in race events and shared the day with many visiting parents. During rainy days, many of our classes are using the gym for play rather than stay in the classrooms.Many teachers at SMUE began a Couch to 5k program in January, have successfully completed that and moved on to several local 5k races. They encourage each other and have also joined a weight loss challenge recently as a team. St. Martin North Students: Fitness Friday – skating for entire school AR Field Trips, skating, monkey Joes, E Fitness, 12 days of Fitness, Yoga, Hip Hop Dancing, Basketball, Football, Jumping Rope/Skip Its, Field Day, running the Halls, Bounce into Summer Faculty: Sweatin’ to the Oldies after school, Walking/Running Club at St. martin Walking Track St. Martin East Health & Nutrition Activities 2012-2013 Academic Year School Wide - The entire school dances every Friday to “12 words” by Larry Bell to reinforce test-taking skills Our school has an annual Red Ribbon week to teach drug education and saying no to drugs.St. Martin East has a 1950s celebration on the 50th day of school that includes a sock hop and a hula-hoop contest. We have a Holiday Celebration that includes songs and dancing the day before winter break. Our annual health fair and blood drive had 49 pints of blood donated, and several health care providers attend and do screenings for parents and teachers. Also educational information is handed out. Running the halls is one of the favorite AR reading rewards. Students who meet their goal get to run the entire length of all three hallways while the rest of the student body cheer. CANDY teaches the entire school: bike safety, holiday safety, back to school safety, fire safety. Our school does bus safety and evacuation twice a year. Our school is a Bronze award winner from the USDA due to the high standards in our school cafeteria. Physical Education - This year we had our Inaugural Yellow Jacket Buzz 5k. There were over 450 participants in the 5k and around 50 participants in the ¼ mile fun run. We had a successful Field Day that consisted of 8 relay races and a class versus class tug o war contest. Every child in our school has been tested twice in the 6 areas designated by the Presidential Fitness Challenge. All students receive a minimum of 150 minutes of physical activity per week. All students are participating in a class mileage challenge to see which class can travel the greatest cumulative distance in a PE class. We participated in and helped set a new world record for the Most People Sport Stacking at Multiple Locations, in Stack Up 2012. We worked as together to raise over 300 dollars for the American heart association. Special Education - Do math exercises every morning- count while we move for @ 10 minutes daily. We went on the nature trail to collect things for a literature project (Leaf Man) We have Friendship Friday with the pre-k class every Friday- we play games and do ABC yoga, etc. We do seated pushups (for joint compression) before writing activities. We jump on the trampoline in our classroom. We practice taking a deep breath, expanding our lungs, and exhaling Speech and Hearing - At St. Martin East May is voice, hearing and language disorders awareness Month for Better Hearing and Speech. Our speech teacher will be doing announcements talking about hearing loss, protecting your ears and good and bad vocal behaviors. She also will have water to hand out to the teachers to promote good vocal hygiene. Kindergarten - There is a spring celebration egg hunt day that includes hula hooping and jump roping. Germ/Hygiene lessons age given, such as the correct way to cough into your elbow. A Dairy farm is visited where children learn how milk is pasteurized and the nutritional information is given. Students learn the benefits of milk to bones and teeth. My plate food portions are taught including all food groups in the correct amounts. The local police department comes in to give health and safety lessons to the kindergarten students. The School Rules are acted out in a roll playing situation to reinforce proper behavior. Daily food group choices are discussed before lunch. Each class has been issued materials to help have more structured play/recess time. Children were able to participate in a wheelchair basketball lesson at the Lynn Meadows Discover Center. Brain Breaks are given throughout the day to help with student’s transition from subject to subject and help improve focus time. The local fire department taught lessons on fire safety to all kindergarteners. Children participate in daily movement songs with their teachers to improve classroom skills. First Grade - Health and Fire Safety: 10/8-10/12, Red Ribbon Drug Awareness: 10/19-10/26, Halloween Safety: 10/31, Bus Safety: Month of August, Self Control Strategies - emotions/feelings: 1/18, Good Exercise Habits - use walking track to get daily cardio, Dental Health: 2/15, Portion Control - serving size, Dairy - need 3 servings a day, Classes walk working on loco motor skills daily after lunch Second Grade - Does Weekly Health lessons from the state Health in Action Website. Work weekly on nutrition and health lessons including: the food pyramid, responsibility, and bulling, Friday Fitness Walks, Daily class running after lunch, Biloxi Regional Hospital taught about hand cleanliness, they used their Glo-Germ machine. Our second grade participates in a Walking Dragon parade to celebrate Chinese New Year, it also teaches cultural diversity. Third Grade - All took part in a lesson from the Tobacco Free Coalition, They are taught an entire lesson on dental health/hygiene, Personal hygiene videos and lessons are covered, which include hand washing, germs, etc.…, Healthy eating habits are discussed before lunch and reinforced during health lessons. All teachers teach a weekly health lesson. Vancleave Attendance Center Vancleave Lower We here at Vancleave Lower have been providing the kids with opportunities to increase their physical activities throughout the day. When they come to PE, we go outside and engage in activities to keep them focused and on task for the majority of their time. We encourage students to get involved in the Fuel Up to Play 60 and make sure they are provided a balanced meal and snacks. Field Day will be held on May 3rd and Each grade will receive 2 hours to enjoy the activities that I have planned. Most of the activities involve water so the students are getting excited! Jerry Tapp, P.E. Teacher Vancleave Upper No report submitted Vancleave Middle Teachers have participated in Biggest Loser for 5 straight years, We have been using Character Counts with the students. Taught Choosing the Best Life, which is the sex education program for the 8 th grade students. P.E. classes are walking for a healthier life at the beginning of each class, then playing multiple team and individual sports during the class. 8th grade students were taken to the health fair, where they learned about healthy lifestyles, nutrition, and medical jobs for the future. We have participated in Red Ribbon Week, which is the drug awareness program that educates students on the effects of drug use and abuse. Vancleave High 2012-2013 Wellness Report Wellness is practiced throughout the curriculum at Vancleave High School. In addition to regular physical education and health classes, the students participate in many healthy practices. Our community based class participates in Special Olympics in the fall and spring. Students in nutrition classes learn about healthy diets, practice reading food labels, and take regular walks to exercise. Our cafeteria has posted signs about healthy foods. In one class, students are only allowed to eat one ingredient food in class and the teacher also does tai chi with students periodically. In October, DECA sold Breast Cancer Awareness T shirts and our Junior Civitan club sold “Bulldogs for a Cure” armbands and we participated in a blood drive. Some of our health classes hosted a speaker from the Singing River Tobacco Treatment Center to make them aware of the dangers of tobacco usage. One of our biology classes conducted a neighborhood survey on health habits of the community. The students asked their neighbors 10 questions about what type of meals were prepared, how they prepared them, and if they were health food conscious? They also made posters about each student’s healthy habits (or not so healthy habits) regarding diet, exercise, hygiene.
