St. Martin Middle Activities for Health Council 12-13
Every classroom has Germ X and Clorox wipes. Every classroom has It’s In Your Hands handouts. These show
students how to cover their cough and wash hands. Every student does physical activities every day for 74 min.
They are working on preparing for the Presidential Fitness Challenge. They stretch and do calisthenics (sit-ups,
push-ups, and jumping jacks) for about 15-20 min every day. After their warm-up, they have a choice to do the
activity for that day or walk for the rest of the period. Coach Foz has implemented Strength and Conditioning class
for 7th and 8th graders. In PE they walk and run the high school track and also do Wii Fit tests or exercises inside.
They MUST participate in activities in order to get a good grade in PE. We are having every student take Health
every other week. We have Gatorade Machines, as well as water and juice for the students to buy drinks. We are
making sure that we are allowing students to eat ONLY what is on the approved list from the district. Our faculty
has started the 24 day challenge by Advocare to make sure that we are fit as well. We also have a group of
teachers that are walking every day after school, and also on their off period for 30 min. 6 th grade teachers are
doing Zumba after school and 7th grade teachers are going to Planet Fitness together. We send home a newsletter
every month with health tips and hand washing instructions.

The students have physical activity during PE, during Music class, and during their recess time. Instead of taking
ecess away from students as a consequence, the students walk laps during recess as a consequence so that their
physical requirements are still met. Science/Health teachers at SMUE have utilized a Reject All Tobacco (RAT)
program in class with accompanying lessons. SMUE participated in Red Ribbon Week in the fall under the direction
of our counselor, Mrs. Carroll. SMUE held a Hoops for Heart event in February; the students raised awareness of
heart disease and also raised over $1000 for the American Heart Association. SMUE held its annual Field Day last
week; the students had an enjoyable day competing in race events and shared the day with many visiting parents.
During rainy days, many of our classes are using the gym for play rather than stay in the classrooms. Many teachers
at SMUE began a Couch to 5k program in January, have successfully completed that and moved on to several local
5k races. They encourage each other and have also joined a weight loss challenge recently as a team.

Wellness is practiced throughout the curriculum at Vancleave High School. In addition to regular physical
education and health classes, the students participate in many healthy practices. Our community based class
participates in Special Olympics in the fall and spring. Students in nutrition classes learn about healthy diets,
practice reading food labels, and take regular walks to exercise. Our cafeteria has posted signs about healthy
foods. In one class, students are only allowed to eat one ingredient food in class and the teacher also does tai chi
with students periodically. In October, DECA sold Breast Cancer Awareness T shirts and our Junior Civitan club sold
“Bulldogs for a Cure” armbands and we participated in a blood drive. Some of our health classes hosted a speaker
from the Singing River Tobacco Treatment Center to make them aware of the dangers of tobacco usage. One of
our biology classes conducted a neighborhood survey on health habits of the community. The students asked their
neighbors 10 questions about what type of meals were prepared, how they prepared them, and if they were
health food conscious? They also made posters about each student’s healthy habits (or not so healthy habits)
regarding diet, exercise, hygiene.
