Higher / Int.2 Philosophy 1
“The searching out and thorough
investigation of truth ought to be the
primary study of man.”
“Science is what you know. Philosophy is
what you don’t know.”
“Philosophy is at once the most sublime
and the most trivial of human pursuits.”

The Course
The course is split into four Units. Two units will be
taught by Mrs Jackson at Dyce Academy and two
units by Mr Jones at Bucksburn Academy. You will
usually be issued with a set of notes at the start of a
unit – and you will be expected to spend 10
minutes homework each night after Philosophy
making sure you understand the concepts you
have been looking at. Please note that if you don’t
do this, you will be disadvantaging yourself for
exams – this is not a subject you can just pick up for
revision. There are complicated concepts which
you will take time to learn.

Expectations
My expectations:• a mature attitude. You are now in 5th / 6th Year and will be
given responsibility.
• willingness to put the work in. This is a very hard course –
and after every lesson, you need to spend 10 minutes at
home going over what you have learned. You will be
asked to submit regular essays and will be tested at regular
intervals.
• an enquiring mind. This is a class where you must discuss in
order to understand.
• an open mind. There are virtually NO right or wrong
answers here!
Higher / Int.2 Philosophy 1
Expectations
My expectations cont....:•Treat notes with respect.
They have been carefully
produced. I don’t expect to have to hand out a second
set of notes to anyone.
•Do not disturb the learning of others.
•This is a class with heritage – there is a strong tradition of
good results and this is going to continue.
•Enjoy! If you take the above advice, you should find this
course one of the most enjoyable you will take. It is like
climbing to the top of a mountain – can be a struggle but
really worth the view!

Concentrate on the
cross in the middle,
after a while you will
notice that this
moving purple dot will
turn green!
Look at the cross
a bit longer and
you‘ll notice that
all dots except the
green one will
disappear.

TIME CAPSULE ACTIVITY
Every year, I ask students to do this….
Take the A5 piece of paper and write your name and the date. Now write
a sentence about what you want to get from the course.
Now write three other pieces of information on the piece of paper.
1. What is your favourite song at the moment.
2. What you would like to do when you leave school.
3. What else you would like to achieve this year.
We will put your answers in an envelope, seal the envelope and only open
it when you finish the course. It may make for interesting reading in May
next year!
