Network Design Case 1
Objective: Your task is to design a network for an office in downtown Bloomington.
Process:
1. You will work as a team to prepare a design, which you will turn into me. This phase is to be completed without
looking at what other teams are designing.
2. I will write a summary of each team’s design on the board.
3. We discuss the designs.
Step 1: Design
Remember to use the network design process in the book as you design your network.
The building will be used by one company that also has offices elsewhere in the U.S. The building is about 70 feet by 50
feet, with two floors. There are a total of 40 offices, with a total of 45 desktop computers. The network has one server,
plus whatever hubs, switches, routers, cable, etc. that you choose to use.
You are to select the equipment you will use for the network. I have attached a list of possible equipment. Use the
worksheet to record the device/cables with their descriptions and costs. Once you have selected all the devices and
equipment, calculate the total cost of your network design.
Make a duplicate copy of your network design worksheet and turn it in to me. On the worksheet you turn in to me,
write all of your names, plus one aspect of the network design that you think is its best feature and one aspect that you
are concerned about that could be a problem.
Step 2: Summary
I will record the costs of each team’s network on the board so you can see how your network compares to the others’.
Remember that cheaper is not always better.
Step 3: Discussion
We’ll discuss the key features that this network should have
Below are the minimum requirements for the network to function. You may have a different WAN connection and
additional software (e.g. Firewall on the router).
