The day came, but not the bridegroom. He wrote a letter—’ ‘Which she received,’ I stuck in, ‘when she was dressing for her marriage? At twenty minutes to nine?’ ‘At the hour and minute,’ said Herbert, nodding, ‘at which she afterwards stopped all the clocks. What was in it, further than that it most heartlessly broke the marriage off, I can’t tell you, because I don’t know. When she recovered from a bad illness that she had, she laid the whole place waste, as you have seen it, and she has never since looked upon the light of day.’ This excerpt comes from the classic novel, Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. One of the strengths of this was novel was Dickens ability to express the emotions his characters were experiencing at a particular time. This is especially true when it comes to Miss Havisham. It was on her wedding day that Miss Havisham learns that she has been jilted by her fiancé, Campeyson. Her reaction to this terrible shock was to literally stop the clock of her life. She stopped living. She closed all the drapes to her home so that daylight could not enter the house. She never took off the dress that was meant for her wedding. For the next fifty years she would live in emotional ruin. I’ve never known anyone to literally react the way Miss Havisham did. But I have known people who have, in one way or another stop the clock in their life. People who have had terrible things happen in their lives and their reaction to it was too stop living. The Bible speaks of one such person, Jacob. In Genesis 37.34-35 when Jacob was told that his beloved son Joseph had been torn apart by a wild animal the divine text says, “Then Jacob tore his clothes, put sackcloth on his waist, and mourned for his son many days. 35 And all his sons and all his daughters arose to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted, and he said, “For I shall go down into the grave to my son in mourning.” Thus his father wept for him.” Jacob was determined to stop living and spend the rest of his years mourning for his son. The Psalmist writes “The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit.” When there is a God who can “make us to lie down in green pastures” even after we have received a terrible blow, isn’t it foolish to stop the clock and waste away our lives?
