UNDERSTANDING SCRIPTURE PART 4 As we continue our study on understanding scripture, we come to the fourth question to be ask, “what type language is being used?’ It is a fact that human language can be divided between two types of speech; literal and figurative. Literal language dominates much of the speech found in the historical books of the Bible, such as, Genesis through 2 Chronicles in the Old Testament and the book of Acts in the New. In fact, the general rule of thumb is to take all language as literal unless the context or the passage says otherwise. Let me illustrate that point this way. Literally speaking a sheep or a lamb is a four legged animal covered by wool. Many times in scripture we read about sheep in this literal sense (Genesis 12.16, 20.14 etc.). However, sometimes sheep or lambs are spoken about in a figurative sense. For instance, in John 10, Jesus spoke about “My sheep.” Christ was not speaking about literal sheep, but Christians who are “his sheep.” In John 1.29 John the Baptist after seeing Jesus Christ says, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” John was not calling Christ an animal, but was using figurative speech to illustrate the eternal truth that Jesus came to be sacrificed for our sins, just as a lamb was used in sacrifices of that day. Know the type of speech that is being used. It will go a long way in helping you understand scripture.
